4.1 scanner, pluged in & worked anyone?

Hi, as in my earlier post I have done quite a few jobs on the X and could do with a bit of re-programming.
The scanner is not recognising the plug unit and I'm going to have a look at the various software upgrades and fixes on various posts.
Question is, has anyone with a 2001 E53 4.4 sport purchased one a scanner and it worked without soldering pins, upgrading software or stroking the unit with a palm leaf dipped in snake oil.

Cheers Col.

I got a "Carsoft" interface of EBay many moons ago when i had my E39.
Worked with that and my 2003 E53
Found INPA and some other software and it works with same interface.
Only needs slight software tweaks to get it to work with most things...

Have you tried setting it up whilst it is plugged into the car??
There are documented cases of USB drivers not installing correctly due to scanner not being powered up from the car

Going to try a couple of tweaks and a re install whilst plugged in the car.
Cheers for the info.

I have noticed before a few people use these scanners, what can you actually use them for?

Bung a search in on here

Ranges from error code check / reset to personalisation of certain items, eg lock doors over certain speed, turn off check control etc etc

You need to connect the cable up to the laptop then install the software from memory. When I first installed the software I did it prior to connecting the cable and it wouldn't recognise or do anything.

I had BMW scanner 1.4.0 couldn't get it to work on Win 7 64 bit, but was ok on XP, bought a cheap laptop of EBay just to run the scanner.
Others have managed to run the software on win7 though, didn't want to risk it on the works laptop though as I need it for re flashing our controllers at work.
Cheap laptop £50 , scanner £30. Worth it I thought.

You need to connect the cable up to the laptop[/quote]

And usually the car (or at least a 12v supply to the correct pins)

If you are running it for any time then put the car on charge too......

Sorry that's what I meant. Need to connect it all up first.

But as it's windows 8 then not sure on how you get it to work as I have a cheap XP dedicated garage laptop with just a few different manufacturer diags software loaded.

Cheers for the input, it does seem that the first port of call will be an install whilst plugged into the car & laptop, the next will be a cheap XP ebay special laptop just in case its a problem with the VM and the third move will make a great YouTube vid of me with laptop, scanner plug, install CD and a WD40 flamethrower.

I was looking forwards to tinkering with the software and after engine and ATF oil and filters, fuel and air filters, rear air suspension to springs, rear PDC sensors/controller, and new front and rear n/s window carriers (including replacing the broken plastic door card clips) the only thing that won't work is the bl@@dy sanner!!!

As a by the way, if anyone is thinking of removing a their rear airbags, for £200 you can do it in about 30 mins per side with no specialist tools and by only removing 1 nut and bolt and 2 nuts. I also did it with a full tank of petrol and a full tank of LPG with the spare in the boot and it sits just right. ( although the more technically minded on the forum may refer to front to back response, folic acid ratio and the diophramic side fettle)

Cheers again for the input, Col from Todmorden (who missed the whole of the local bit of the Tour De Just down the road from me, just when I found out how much ATF fluid is still in the filter, not a nice facemask !!!)

I recently bought a cheap eBay cable and software INPA, DIS, TIS etc I installed it on windows 7 and downloaded the the demo version of bmw scanner to try. Just remember to change the USB to com port 1 on the laptop and it should work.
The demo version did on mine.
I've just ordered the lead and sw from china for bmw scanner 1.4 so once that arrives I'll update and let you know.
