I-Drive Crashing

The i-drive in my 2011 40d keeps crashing.  The screen goes red, then the system seems to reboot (screen says "BMW").  This can happen every few minutes or slightly less frequently, with no apparent rhyme or reason.

The car's under warranty and BMW has tried three times to fix it.  First time, they replaced some hardware (didn't tell me what).  Second time, they reprogrammed the software.  Now they've replaced the 'comms unit'.  It still keeps on crashing.  Also, since they gave me the car back (after replacing the comms unit), there's absolutely no AM/FM at all, just DAB radio.

This is now becoming a complete 'mare and I doubt that the dealer will know what to do - he seemed baffled by it.

Has anyone had this issue and got it resolved?

Thanks for any input!

Sounds like they're clutching at straws!!

Not many go wrong and those I've seen reported needed a complete replacement.  It could be a wiring fault or bad data bus connection for the radio part.....or they forgot to plug it in again!!

Thanks Richard.

Do you know what a complete replacement involves?  What are the constituent parts?

Is the 'comms box' separate from the hard-drive?  Where is the central processor/motherboard?  I've been wondering whether it's hard drive error, or a motherboard problem.

Thanks,

Simon

Combox is in the boot - probably behind a trim panel. Bit does the USB/Phone and some media conversion work plus internet.  It's connected by fibre to the CIC.

Hard drive is inside the CIC unit which is the bit below the vents and a/c controls.  That whole unit has to be replaced and a new one coded to the car.  They are not cheap so warranty replacement.  Of course that needs BMW to approve it... >:(

Realoem shows it as this chunk with the 8 control buttons on.

That's fantastic to know, thanks again.  ;D

I'm going to press for a replacement as this will be the 4th attempted fix and it is a real PITA

Mine is going in for the 2nd time tomorrow. It hasn't happened in over a year and then suddenly at the weekend the screen went red and off everything went. Screen blank. We happened to be near our local dealer where we bought the car new 2 years ago. I showed the salesman the problem and he booked it in. As I left the dealership it came back on and no problems since for 3 days!! They couldn't find an issue last time when it went in for a day last year. I tell you what though - I lay money it blows up permanently 5 days after the warranty runs out! Luckily we have an extremely helpful dealer, in fact, the salesman is picking the car up tomorrow on his way into work (he lives two roads away!). I'll update on what happens.

Car Infotainment Computer.  The bit under the a/c controls. Basically the iDrive brain.
