How to turn the car off?

I gave an old guy a ride, and he was impressed. But when we stopped he noticed that turning off the motor doesn't turn off the console, stereo, etc. I showed him how it shuts off if I lock the doors. A crusty old frog, he remarked that for a car that costs half what his house does, I can't turn the damn thing off unless I lock the doors.
So, how does one turn the confounded thing off without awaiting its timeout or locking the doors? Is there an English-language owner manual out here somewhere? Mine's in German... O:-)

Pushing the stop/start button again just starts the motor.

What happens if you push the button without a foot on the brake?
In mine it brings the warning lights on and the car runs through its pre-start up tests.

Keyless entry and start could be the difference here. Mine has it; yours don't. I usually have a heavy briefcase in hand so I chose that option.

Comfort Access - Keyless entry here! On mine I press stop/start once to stop the engine. Then again and it turns off idrive etc unless you've still got your foot on the brake in which case the car will restart.
Downsides are the missus loses the keys in her handbag and we don't have a comfort access front door.

Thanks, that did the trick. If I keep my hoof off the brake, the start/stop button turns on/off all the electrics.
As for the missus, mine has a nasty habit of rubbing our cars ever so slightly on various solid objects, so she does not drive 'my' X5.

Yep. Scuff appeared recently on rear bumper corner. Apparently she couldn't see the post even with massive mirrors that dip when reversing, parking sensors and rear view camera.

Slight scuff on the rear bumper, but at least her make up was perfect. That is of course what the mirrors are for.....
