How many days since your last problem?

Post by Spartanx5 » Thu Jun 26, 2014 4:27 pm

So I am just on my way to collect my x from the garage, she has been in there for nearly 3 weeks and she only went for a service!!!!! 3 weeks later and in the garages defence I have to add she was only there that long because I said just keep until you get time to fix her,

Well £1300 later she has
Full major service
2 new rear tyres
Replaced timing chain gaskets

So today is my first post "day 1 since last fault" in what will continue everyday until she breaks again.

At least I had time to make my wish list and now I can get on with it, will post some pics after this evenings clean

Is there any chance you could change this to minutes?!

My 12 year old 4.6 only ceases to have problems when it's not being driven

Didn't even make a full day, on a little drive I get a orange triangle with a arrow over it and 4x4 underneath it, then just really quickly as I turned off the ignition, " trans fail safe prog" flashed up then went?

As on your other thread.  Could be a battery issue triggering a 'Transmission Fail Safe' warning and the warning light, or the rolling dia of your new tyres is not 'in limit' between the front and rear which may be causing transmission errors.

These cars can be very sensitive to the tyre sizes and types, more so if there is significant wear difference front to rear.  It is not unknown to blow a diff in worst case incidents.

Thanks chap, I looked onto some other people who have had this problem and "battery problems comes up a lot and the tyre thing like u said, I guess it has been unused for over 3 weeks and I just took it out now for a short motorway blast and then dived down the back roads to my house, 20mile round trip and the x5 went great, message gone, symbol gone and didn't come on, I have a 200 mile trip to London tomorrow evening so I will report back after that.

My battery died very suddenly on Monday, got the usual click click click click when trying to turn over for a few seconds then nothing.  Interestingly just before it died totally it came up with "Transmission Fail Safe".

New battery fitted and all is well, the battery that came out was the original so at 9 years old it's done well!

The trans fail safe message seems to come up a lot on these cars, from what I have learned since mine did it, just about any problem you get makes the car go into limp home mode (trans fail safe prog). With mine we think it's the diff getting wound up as my wheels are stupid and also I have different tryes front and back, if I drive normal, it never does it, but if I floor it after a while i get dsc warnings then trans fail safe. But for most people if your getting trans fail safe it's usually battery or alternator related.

......and with the dead battery syndrome it usually doesn't go into 'limp mode' either.

I've had mine nearly 2 years and it's never been 100% fixed, at the moment it's got a leaky steering rack, a leaky valley pan, squeaky discs, broken sat nav and the rocker head gaskets are starting to weep! But I still love it and will soldier on with the repairs, it is 12 years old after all!

When first brought mine I brought it knowing the rocket cover gaskets were leaking, it was an absolute bitch of a job, but seeing as we were in the bonnet I did all the sparks aswell, when she is on form I seem to forget all the little annoying bits,

My gaskets were done when I first got it and my mate who replaced them said they will only last a couple of years......He was right!

Had my car (2003 4.4i) since Feb......and....deep breath.....

New steering column
New starter motor
New rocker cover gaskets
New suspension bushes (front & rear)

and now....new gearbox needed.

Can't remember a week gone by in the last 4 months that something hasn't needed fixing or looking at.....it would be nice to actually enjoy the car......lol
