Fuel Guage Fixed-info for others

My fuel guage suddenly would never go past, in clock face time 11.00. If i filled up it would go higher but always stop at the 11.00 postion on its way down. If you ever get this its one of the senders under the back seat, the N/S one. This does the bottom half of the guage, the O/S one (again under back seat) is the pump with sender for the higher part of the guage. So had the N/S one replaced which cost about £60.00 plus about £45.00 for fitting at my Indy, job jobbed.

If the higher end sender goes you have to replace the fuel pump also as one unit at £240.00 plus fitting.

Hopefully this may help others, which is a great benefit of this fine forum. :driving:

Good post and will be very helpful. Jeegnesh is on here less and less but he had the same problem after filling his diesel with petrol. Lucky for him it was the less expensive sender... Another Jason repair...

Old Thread Alert!

I have this problem on my 2004 3.0D :(

On the day I bought it it was showing over half a tank of Diesel and showing 350+ Miles left, I even said to my brother who was in the car with me "this is the first time i've ever bought a car and the tank hasn't been completely empty!"

1 Mile from my house (after driving 20 Miles down the M6) and I get the 'beep, beep, beep' and 'Fuel Injection System' error come up, then about 10m further on the car cuts out totally and wouldn't start again. It still showed over half a tank and 300+ miles to go. No red Light or anything.

I called the dealership I bought it from straight away and they said that they had not put any fuel in the car in weeks and it definitely did not have half a tank of fuel.

I walked to the nearest Petrol Station which luckily was not too far away, bought a can, filled it up with Diesel and took it back to the car. As soon as I put the Diesel in, the car fired up straight away and was as normal (although the fuel gauge was still reading just over half a tank full).

I then drove back to the petrol station and filled it up with £130 of Diesel and the needle moved correctly and showed a Full tank and 500+ miles. As i drove it over the next few days it dropped accordingly, but a week on and I've covered 350+ miles and I noticed that the Fuel guage seems to have stuck at the same place again. I'm sure I don't have another 350 miles of Fuel in the tank.

You guys think a new N/S Sender will sort me out?

Any help would be great!

(I took this pic as soon as the error came up, about 10 seconds before the engine cut out)

I'm keeping the can in the boot just in case...

I would say so, but as above dealer should sort it.

Nah, as part of my savage negotiating to buy the car, part of the deal was 'sold as seen'. It wasn't a BMW dealership, just a used car dealer. The car had a few things that needed doing, and I've fixed almost all of them, but this fault still needs attention.

I have a feeling that even if I did have warranty, that particular place would not honour it anyway.

it's not a problem actually sorting it, as my brother is a mechanic at Subaru but I just wanted to make sure the part is the right one before I order it :)
