E53, Aux Input.

OK, so once I found the route through the dash down to the passenger footwell, the installation of this was pretty simple. I think it cost me £13 - £14 from ebay, and was all very easy to follow the wiring etc, and now i can enjoy music from my phone through the stereo.
All well and good!
BUT! And it had to be a big but, I can select the AUX function fine. I can listen to the music. (However it is pretty ''tinny'' compared to the radio / cd player) (Yes I have the ''AUX'' up to level 5, i found that in the ''Audio '' menu pretty quickly.)
IF I then slot the phone into the charging cradle, momentarily, the music sounds Better (read: right) then it just bombs out the AUX back to the CD player.
Anyone any ideas what's going on here?

Tested with both my Iphone4s and daughter number ones Ipod. Both do the same thing. As soon as you connect to power, it bombs out the connection. and refuses to let you have the AUX function while connected to power.
Must be an earthy thing? More investigations required........

Not sure that the original AUX input plays anything more than mono, the sound directly from a mobile is terrible. I know the BM54 radio unit can be upgraded by Carphonics to a proper stereo input, but most people have gone down the Intravee / Dice route to get much better sound than the awful original mono Aux.

The BMW mod to connect an Ithingy (or any mp3player) to the Aux was stereo and provided a 3.5mm port in the glovebox.
It does sound like you may have a wiring issue on the power side that may be forcing the system into a protection mode - be it the car or iDevice.

BMW provided wiring kit. Plugs into the rear of the navigation head and brings wires out to a 3.5mm socket in the glovebox. 'Aux' is under the modes on the Mk4 navigation display head.

Sounds like a cable fault.
I've had the oem aux cable, Worked a treat no sound quality issues.
Must say - nothing like having playlists and controls on screen like with an intravee.

You need to find the pin out of the Business CD connector and link into that.
It only works with some models of the Business sytems though...
I have researched this before, and should have diagrams etc on my laptop.
I'll try to remember to dig them out.
Just thinking out loud re Mono...
Is that coming out ALL speakers or just one set (front / rear)???
If you connect it to the Phone input of the multilock connector (ie for bluetooth hands free) then that is mono and only on Front speakers..
