Just had inspection 2 done on the motor and also got gearbox oil and filter changed.
What a difference! So much smoother in gears now and no more lurching!!
Also got front pads changed as they where pretty low
Need to get some pics up of the motor really as well

What year?
If the lurching comes back gets the transmission updated
Don't go to the dealer, go to an Independent with Autologic. if dealer is your only option then ask for a flat rate fee to either update the car or ask a one a off quote to update the TCU.

Silly question, when would i know the gearbox oil needs changing?.
its a 2005 plate 3.0D and nothing in the service books shows it has been changed considering I have had the car now for about 6yrs

If you check the forums unless you have issues with the gearbox most people say leave it alone. Whilst others say 60k, bmw say it didn't need attention as it's sealed for life. So I don't think that there is a definitive answer to that question. My gearbox seems to have good and bad days

Mine is on 120k now and when they changed it they said it was black and crusty!
I am a believer in nothing is for life
Mine is a 2004 3.0D
Hopefully the lurching stays away but if so will get the update for it

Misguided advice.
ZF recommends the following from their own website:
ZF automatic transmissions are filled with specially developed oils. At very high operating temperatures, the oil ages faster than under normal conditions. Depending on the driving style (e.g., many trips at high speeds or sporty driving), ZF recommends a transmission oil change every 80 000 to 120 000 km, or after 8 years at the latest.

I always recommend a fedauto garage if not the dealer.
This is one nearest to you.

Im a great believer in getting the gearbox serviced! If your car has done over 60.000 miles get the gearbox serviced! Anything that has moving parts and takes oil, the oil does need changing!

My X is about 130k miles. I bought when it was about 53k miles so most of the mileage was 120miles motorway daily trip to work. After spending so much in fuel, I bought a golf MKIV to do the motorway miles and relegated the X5 to to weekends use from about 3yrs ago.
Any recommendations for somewhere down south (.. SE london/Kent) to take for servicing?
cheers

Yep that's them! They changed the business name but they are still the same guys!
I've used them for years and always found them to be very knowledgeable.
