New Brake pads

Hi Guys

Original brakes up for replacement on the X5 E70 MSport 40d. Like a new look! Red stuff or Brembo maybes?

Alloys going in for refurb too.  :camera:

Even my drifting friends say that Red Stuff is overkill on the street, and they take while to heat up and work properly. Do you autocross the car? Otherwise, Yellow Stuff pads should do fine.

Some confusion here as REDSTUFF pads are a lower grade / heat range than the YELLOWSTUFF pads.

Full EBC range goes from BLACK (standard compoud), GREEN, RED, YELLOW, BLUE.

I've used Red and Yellow on various road / trackday cars and prefer the YELLOW compound especially on a heavier vehicle.

What's wrong with the OEM pads exactly?

It never ceases to amaze me the amount of people using OTT brake pads for driving around town and the m'way.

Its more for the look tbh. OEM just looks awful from the outside :o

I dont use it on track so performance is not essential.

There's always room for improvement ;)

Have had my 40d for 2 months and done 4k miles, and from an indicated 15k miles left before the front pads needed changing, I've now got red lights all over the dash on start up indicating they're overdue for a change. Either the standard pads don't last very long or I need to change my driving style (probably the latter as an Evo owner for the last 7 years  :))

Having said that, the stopping power is somewhat lacking, and the amount of dust the standard pads chuck out for a road grade is horrendous. Going to stick a set of Pagid's in for the moment, but upgraded pads seem sadly lacking - the Brembo's don't seem to be available anywhere for the E70 front's, and I wouldn't have EBC ever again. Are there any other alternatives ?

It's a heavy car.

The stopping power is perfectly fine with OEM brake pads. There is something wrong with your braking system if this is not the case.

I always recommend either the dealer pads or TMD friction pads so Pagid or Textar are fine.

But you do realise you will get the same brake dust?

Don't trust alternatives. When I was working on an E90 issue, I saw an E46 come in to the workshop with a report of odd clacking sounds from the front. Suspension was all tight so I told the chap to get the brakes stripped down. Low and behold some aftermarket Blackdiamond pads where the friction material had come off the backing plate......

Ive been looking into "upgraded / sport" front pads myself, and found there sadly lacking for the E70.. Brembo seem to do a rear "sport" pad, but no fronts.??
Obviously as its not classed as a "sports" car..
And i too shan,t be fitting the EBC pads, as i found there not to my liking , ive had them in a Porsche 968 before and found them "inferior"...
Maybee a set of the standard Brembo or Pagid pads will do for now...

Serves me right for quoting frog drifters without checking facts first.  :-[

So, Red or Yellow are streetable versions?  As I may have mentioned earlier, yank car mags have reviewed the EBC pads favorably.

My stock pads work fine but I tire of washing the wheels every 4 days. My driving is 50% twisty country lanes so my brakes do get used.

I've put brembo's Disc and pads on the front as i got a good deal on them on ebay- same price as the OEM's from EuroCarParts.

Pro's-
Less dust
Seem to stop a tad better at high speeds

Cons-
Squeak like a motherlover at low speeds. When cold, they squeak quite badly in stop-start traffic. SO it's either no brakes, or break quite firmly until warm.

Used the sachet that came with them, might have a google and see if there's anything better.
Its quite a common problem according to the internet (Brembo Squeal)

Never heard of someone changing pads to improve the look of a car , that's a first  :D

Why not do the job properly and get an f10 m5 front brake upgrade ??

Ive just fitted a set of Pagid front discs and pads to my X5, and its transformed. :) :) :)
The previous discs and pads weren't worn out, but they just didn't give me any confidence , maybe the pads were cheap ones that somebody had fitted before...
I looked high and low for some "performance" pads for the fronts and found nothing ::) ::)....
