Bad timing on my part...... I bought my x5 in Jan, I paid the CAP price from an Indy dealer of just under £20k. Essentially the same car  bought today would be around £17-8k tops and trading it (which I am considering) would lose my a whopping £6k. I have never owned a secondhand car that have plummeted in value so quickly. A dealer friend tells me premium 4x4's are flooding the market presently hence prices dropping accordingly.

I either need to take the hit now or wait till autumn when hopefully the car is a little more desirable.....

Oh well, chalk it up as experience I suppose.

Hi, selling a car after such a short period can mean you take a hit. A few years ago I bought a Vectra 2.0 Sri from a local garage for 7.5k and within 6 months part exchange and got I think £5k but I want the new car more.

I have learned timing of selling is important, in autumn when winter is approaching everyone wants a 4x4 in March with summer approaching they all want convertibles.

Also as new models such as the f15 come out it drops the price of the e70 and so impacts on the e53, but only when you sell it. Best way to sell it is privately as you get more money but have the hassle factor and it's uncertain, my old Vxr took over 3 months to get sold but patience paid off.

Wise words indeed, you'll only lose money buying and selling cars- unless you're a dealer! I chucked away about 7.5k in less than 6 months after buying a 6 month old Audi Q3, which I hated! Put 14k miles on it in 5 months, sold privately, then paid over the top for my X5! Mind you, I do like the X5 despite the rattles and bumps! Will be keeping it for a while and doing my own servicing and repairs like I used to in the 'old' days...
If you really want something different, then life is too short and all that, take the hit and enjoy your new wheels, otherwise a bit of patience (and research) will pay off ;-)

Last Nov we bought a 57 (low tax) 3.0d for 15k and the trade price today is around 10k.
Its not for sale though as we have just put on an aero kit and I have a nice new set of Michelin boots sat in the conservatory ready to fit :)
