Not long ago became an owner of a 2005 3.0d Sport, loving the car so far and actually am not as disappointed in the mpg as I'd feared...see 26mpg around and about, and today saw over 39mpg on a 25 mile motorway jaunt

Anyway when I got the car I didn't bother to reset the gearbox memory, and although I am pretty fine with the way it drives I do sometimes wish it was a little more anxious to change up (know I can use manual mode but am a little lazy!). This is my first diesel, first automatic and first 4x4 so maybe it's just me not being used to the engine getting this big beast up to speed, BUT do you think it's worth me resetting the gearbox now (after 3 weeks of ownership) or will it just not make much difference/settle itself eventually.

mine is of similar age, i occaisionally do the soft gearbox reset, it does make the car feel more zingy! and less sluggish, but it seems to go back to normal after a few days 

Lol. Maybe the gearbox knows me better than I think. , and I just drive like a slug!!    )

Would be interested as mine feels abit sluggish when changing gears.

It should be no more than turn the key to Pos2 (don't start it), floor the accelerator pedal for 30 secs and switch off.

Start the car and drive away.  The 'adaption' procedure will then relearn 'you' as a driver over the next few days.

I'm presuming you're used to a manual, I've just recently bought my X5, love the car, it's my first auto after 26 years of driving a manual, my last car was a 5 series with the same 3.0D engine which has bags of torque, in normal driving situations ie, just taking your time, changing gear at 1500 rpm would be more than sufficient due to the torque, unfortunately autos work differently and change gear at a higher rpm which not only takes a bit of getting used to but also seems to be not very efficient ... You'll get used to it, it's just the way autos are, I have the sport model and it seems to think I always am always about to want loads of power available and hangs onto the rpm even under light loads rarely changes up below 2000 rpm ... And the ridiculous down shifts on a steep downhill slope if you brake is quite something, I saw 3000 rpm the other day with a cold engine which  I would never do, to the point that when driving on steep hilly roads I always select manual mode now, though I've read that switching stability control off prevents this ... Haven't tried that yet
