Towing Buzzer

I hitched the caravan to the X5 today for the first time to check the electrics were working ok. All the lights on the back of the caravan work as they should so no problem there but the indicator buzzer located in the rear of the car somewhere seems to have a mind of its own.
When I indicate left or right I get a continuous beep beep noise as I have done with every other tow vehicle I've owned. If I barake when indicating I get a continuous Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep until I come off of the brake pedal. When I switch the lights on there is a long beep for about 3 seconds before it stops. However if I hit the brake pedal when the side/main lights are on I get a continuous beep for as long as I am braking.
The towbar is a cheap looking aftermarket fixed jobbie that juts out from a cut out in the rear bumper with standard 7-pin electrics and I am wondering if it has been installed correctly or professionally. Does the symphony of buzzing noises sound correct or should I only hear a noise when indicating?
