Post by Colin » Sun May 04, 2014 11:13 am

Morning all , I was out last night for a meal and as we were walking to carpark got talking to a guy who was sitting in his e53 X5d , we must have talked for 10 / 15 min, then he drove of, there was clouds of blue smoke from his exhausts , the car was idling all the time we were talking so it was warm, what was that all about ?????

Could be any number of things depending on the engine type.  Breather, poor mixture, blocked air filter, rings, turbo, seals, wrong oil (too thin when warm) etc etc.

Mine was smoking when it was tanked until a few weeks ago.  I noticed in the service records it appeared as if the air filter had not been changed ( which is a PITA, as we say) for a very long time (BMW service by Sytners Nottingham to boot !)  Changed the filter and seemed to cure it.  Also, the crankcase breather filter can cause the dreaded blue smoke.  Done that as well.
So if you see him again - it needs a service for starters.

Not really.  I could always hear mine whistling if I had the window open and was accelerating 'briskly'.  Should be a pretty high pitch though.
