Could be a faulty wheel sensor, get the codes read to see if it pinpoints anything.

it can also be a sign of a dodgy battery starting to play up - If I let my battery run down for whatever reason (usually when she has left an internal light on) then the 4x4 symbol is the first to light up.

Start by charging the battery fully (ideally with 8 stage charger/conditioner), Id then get the battery and alternator tested as it may be an easier check than a sensor if you don't a have a reader for the codes, then if ok move to the sensor checking afterwards

how old is your battery?

Short journeys will kill the battery.  These cars have heavy electrical loads and it takes a lot to keep the battery topped up.

Age of the battery has no real impact except how well it takes a charge.  The X6 I have draws 60A doing nothing! The E53 won't be a lot different, especially if it's a high specced one.  More modules means more power load.

A dealer told me the E53 can have more than 50 which all power up when the key is turned.  Almost everything comes on for the various systems checks and network buses.

Wheel sensors tend to throw this error up though.
