newbie question any advise welcome

Post by x5 newbie » Mon Dec 13, 2010 11:54 am

hi everyone im new to the site and x5's. im about to buy my first x5 its a 2003 3.0i sport it has what i would class as high mileage but fell in love with it as soon as i sat in the drivers seat, just interested to know if i should be looking at x5's with lower mileage, or is mileage not really an issue if its been looked after right and seviced on a regular basis. it has 134000miles and full bmw service history, any advice would be greatly received thanks. :)

Hi and welcome,

That is high. You know the routine, things will be worn and need replacing or will have been replaced. Ask if the gearbox or turbo have also been replaced. They are common faults on these. And this guide will explain everything you need to know 10 times better than I ever could...

Sanj, 3.0i not 3.0d.

x5 newbie, welcome to the site. Tell us a little more about the car? Auto Gearbox or Manual? Sat Nav? Price? Options? Service History etc etc

Make sure your read the guide... don't rush into buying even though you are in love! Let your head make your decision and not your errr heart.

hi thanks for the quick replys. Its an automatic, its from a local car dealers they have it advertised at £7495 i am pxing my astra convertible 2001 yreg so they said they'll take my astra plus they want £6000, they said it had full bmw service history, im going there today with my mate whos a mechanic hes going to have a good look over it its a 2003 53 reg, no sat nav that i can remember seeing when i last looked at it, just the basic cd/stereo i think, parking sensors, electric windows and the usual. im going to have a proper look today at everything , as its not a diesel i was a bit concerened about the mileage, but every one iv seen advertised has quite a bit of mileage on it unless i spend over £10,000 which would be pushing the buget a bit or get an older one ie 2001. thanks again for any advise.

[quote=""x5 newbie""]hi thanks for the quick replys. Not having Sat Nav in a car like this can be a problem. People expect it. When it comes to re-sale, it might not so much affect the value at this age and price but more affect the desirability.

Like I said earlier, try not to fall in love straight away with this car. The 3.0i in an automatic doesn't return the best MPG - only maybe 2-3 MPG more than the 4.4i V8. If it was me looking, or you were asking my advice, I would look at the 4.4 models to see what you can get for your money. They usually have a higher spec and are also in the price range you are looking at. You might not get a 2003 but you will get one with lower mileage.

Example 1 - Looks ok but may need a Service soon as only one light remaining...

Example 2 - Much better looking, 2003, and really close to your budget... also has heated seats which isn't mentioned in the ad...

Example 3 - Less than you were going to spend, nice alloys, front and rear heated seats, well documented - not the wide screen sat nav but that can be upgraded...

The last thing I want you to do is rush into buying that 3.0i and later when you know a little more about the X5's be disappointed that you didn't look at what options you can get with them i.e. Heated Seats, Sat Nav, TV, Pano Sunroof, Upgraded Sound System, Xenons etc etc. Try to learn as much as you can about them and then decide what options are important to you.
