hi I need some help advice please  .  I was driving at about 10mph in 2nd gear and all of a sudden then car lurched forward and stopped as if all the brakes where on and would not move forward . I put it into neutral and the car free wheeled no problem , went into 1st 2nd and it locked up again with a really bad noise .drove it onto drive and noticed I what I think is gearbox oil dripping onto
the floor . any ideas please    manual  diesel 55 plate

Sounds like transmission so could be gearbox, transfer box/xDrive unit - the ATC500.  You'll need to get underneath to establish exactly which as you need to be able to detect where the oil is coming from.

With the car stationery and switched off, can you select all 6 gears?  If you can then it's less likely to be the box itself and they are a very rare failure whereas the transfer case/xDrive units are more likely especially given the car stops.  Will it move in any other gear, or is it just 2nd that has the issue?

This is the transfer unit/xDrive unit

A breakers might be your best bet, apart from getting a new mortgage with BMW of course  :(

These guys seem to be on various boards, bmautoparts, but I have no experience of them.
