Hi all
Just thought I'd say hello I'm about to purchase an x5 3.0d sport 2004 with only 54000. I don't think the gearbox oil has been changed and I keep hearing horror stories, should this be top of my to do list ..

Mine was 108k and I didn't change it as Sanj says if you can't feel anything wrong don't change it. My BMW tech did say about changing it but also asked if I had any issues and when I said no he was happy to leave it be

Welcome. My gearbox oil was changed when the sump leaked, it did stop the lurch afterwards though.

At 25k mine was leaking so I had to have it changed BUT there is no sure fire cure if you have the lurch (car jumps forward when you're coming to a halt). Sealed for life doesn't mean that (not on this forum) but no need if it's fine right now. Scare stories are only from those that have voiced their misfortunes (that's gotta be less than 1% of all worldwide sales). Leave it for now and get used to it then move forward once you get to know the car properly.
Next meet you come along and drive couple of the other cars or get other opinions to gauge yours (once you've lived with and got to know it). Preventative maintenance is good, lots here in other things to do, breather, clean EGR, oil change for starters.

Welcome and congrats on the purchase.
At that mileage I would say change it when it hits 60K. ZF themselves say the oil should be changed at 60k intervals and just your engine you change the oil to maintain it. Peeps tend to leave it when the mileage is a lot higher as then the thoughts are that it could cause more issues.
