What have people done with the 'tarnished' side steps?

Im thinking its either a complete sand and polish then lacquer, powder coating or wrapping in CF..

I recall seeing a thread a little while back where someone recomended a product that worked well on the side steps... Buggered if I can remember what it was now!!

I'm thinking of painting mine the same colour as my wheels.

i used autosol metal polish and really really fine wire wool - came up really nice. I saw a black E70 with the side steps powder coated black .. looked really well.

Some products do weird things to the black plastic grip spots if they are too strong.
(Makes them go white at the edges).

I've heard of people using wonder wheels - but haven't myself.

Autosol works well - but be prepared for plenty of elbow grease and you'll have to keep up with them!

Would be great if you could polish them and then lacquer them with a clear coat to protect them.

on my first x5 i removed them, removed the bungs and painted them silver, on my second i did the same and painted them black, never had any issues with the paint marking or anything

I used wonder wheels but nothing was as good as fine wire wool then sealing them.  I took off all the rubber plugs with the back end of two spoons :-)
