Evening all!
Just a quick question for you. My 4.4 is due an Inspection 1 service, I'm located in Cwmbran, South Wales and am considering where to take it, dealer (Synter) or indy.
Has anyone a recommendations? Also what would be the guide price?
Cheers
Jack

Re: Inspection 1
Main dealer prices vary widely depending on regions and individual dealers.
Cheapest you are likely to get at main dealer will be discounted rates, however, discounts apply realtive to age of vehicle.
Details of a current scheme on the following thread if you click here
Independents can be cheaper but again prices vary so best to call around.
To date I have supplied my own oil to main dealers for stamped inspections. I ask for quotes with and without oil then add my costs to the later. If supplying own oil it is essential to know exactly what type & exactly how much oil is needed....Don't ask dealer as you will indicate a lack of knowledge which might not help in trying to have give a price negotiation edge.
Age/mileage of car plus integrity of history may be factors............for some there is more motivation to go main dealer if history to date all properly stamped. The higher the mileage the less of an issue full dealer history becomes for some though IMO it is good to have comprehensive history records. The wiser of those going down the d.i.y service route will document work done thoroughly to show car has been looked after properly.

Re: Inspection 1
Thanks for the reply AW8! Mine is a 2001 so will qualify for pensioner rates I guess. Which oil should I go for any recommendations?
Re: Inspection 1
My local dealer has a discount scheme but outside of the scheme I linked to.Prices may vary & the scheme in the link is participating dealers only.
If you elect to let them use their own oil you wont get choice and they are likely to use Castrol Edge think its 0W30. I believe Sytners buck the trend & use same as I supply to my dealer - Mobil 1 0W40 fully syntehtic. Its a little thin for liking of some but no issues here.
The BMW recommended oil required for your car will be BMW LL01 spec or the later LL04 spec. To confuse matters more other NON LL01 or LL04 oil's out there which sellers claim are up to the job. Not doubting this but dealer wont fill self supply of anything other than LL01 or LL04 labelled oils.
Dont dismiss good independents either. Mine has FBMWSH but at 98k miles I wouldnt dismiss it having a stamp from my indy next time. I trust my indy & get to speak to the pertson who has done the work on my car. My next service wont be due until over 110k miles so not a decision I need to make now.

Re: Inspection 1
Nice 1 AW8! Think I'll pick up some castrol edge and see if I can negotiate a deal for the change over.
Re: Inspection 1
There should be little to negotiate re the oil : simply ask for price all in and ask for the oil cost portion then ask them to deduct to give you 2 prices for with & without oil.
To source oil try ebay, opie oils, halfords, asda, (ideally costco for mobil 1). You need 7.5 litres
Edge ebay item 150528842661 Mobil 1 item 170577724908 trusted seller same for both.
