Help Smoke driving me mad

Ok had the X5 for few weeks now

And upon first start up or if it's been left standing for a few hours it lets of
A white/blue cloud of smoke smells like oil

I have previously blanked hose of the vacuum pipe from EGR valve and smoke stopped a little

The vacuum pipe has now been reconnected when
Connecting it I thought I would see whether EGR was gunky

It was clean however there was some
Moisture inside valve but like a drop of oil

With the EGR vacuum pipe connected whenever I give it hard acceleration I leave behind a cloud of
Smoke

My question is what is at fault

- EGR valve
- EGR cooler
- valve stem seals

Starts first time everytime

No issues with that so even more confused

Also should turbo make a whistle sound when under load

Turbo should make a whistle, yes.  Usually barely audible unless the window is open though.

What is your oil consumption like?

Any sign of oil in the inlet structures including turbo, inter cooler, connecting pipes?

Nice clean breather?

When I changed breather all was ok

Oil consumption when I last checked was level

Only thing did notice was when I removed the big black pipe from EGR valve to check if blocked there was a little moisture/oil there

Checked the remainder of the pipe all seemed ok

The turbo sounds like a dump
Valve when reaches approx 2000rpm but power is not lost

Take the air pipes off and have a look.  There should be very little or no oil present.  The inter cooler is below the coolant radiator.

Yes those pipes seemed all ok

This leaves me to being even more confused

I know a little puff of white/blue  smoke is normally

But I am getting puff everytime I accelerate hard also

It all seems to clear once engine is warm

Sounds like similar issues I've seen on golf Tdi's.

Usually causes are either leaking seals on the boost/intercooler pipes or the egr valve itself sometimes sticking.

A little something you could try if all seals are ok on the pipes is to disconnect the main inlet pipe to the egr and spray Wynns intake/carb cleaner in and talking about the whole can. Then reconnect and rev the nuts off it to decoke it all. Makes a difference on the vag tdi engines.

Raj I'll give that a go

Would that be the same as if I were to just change the EGR valve?

Another think leaking seals on pipe is different to leaking seals on turbo right? And are they easy fix

Yes it is kind of like replacing it depending upon what the issues is with the egr.

Not really looked at the pipe work on the X for the boost pipes etc.

Here's the link for doing the tdi 150pd engine if it helps:

right took X5 into garage today

mechanic was baffled as to what could be causing the issue

he checked everything and said all ok

what he did do was pour some injector cleaner into my tank and told me to monitor smoke as he honestly couldnt find any other issues on the car

Can you tell us what type of smoke is coming out of top engine as you stated on Xoutpost and where I have also replied to you, with further suggestions?

I have the same problem with mine. Only had the car a few months but didn't notice it till after I had serviced it and blanked off the egr valve at the same time!  so either I just didn't notice it before the service (I'm sure I would have done) or its something to do with what I have done. So in my eyes it's either the oil in the engine (I used castrol as recommended) the breather filter or the blanking of the egr valve.

Hi

Powers1

looks as though the smoke was due to the air intake housing not being connected been told it's some sort of back draft

i have tested again and no smoke so fingers crossed it was just that
