Oil Leak

Hi all,

I am hoping you might be able to give me a heads up /point in the right direction before I get the car looked at please.

Just spotted a small oil leak (drops on the drive) but looking into the engine bay it's all clear / clean.

Looking under the car, just behind the front wheels - in the middle of one of the under trays is a round cover (the size of a side plate I'd guess) and it seems to be coming from behind there.

Any ideas?

I had an oil service carried out at BMW less than 2 months ago and I am wondering if it could be oil filter related? (I've only done about 800 miles since but a few long trips have seem to have done it)

I was a little disappointed with the service I got and so if it isn't related then I'll be off down the Indy route.

However, if it's part of the job that has gone wrong then I feel they need to correct it.

Sadly, the warranty ran out 2 months ago too!

Thanks in advance.

Could be coming from the drain plug (I think it's under that cover) or as you suggest the oil filter.  Only way to know is get it in the air and get the cover off.

Just an update.

It was indeed the back of the oil filter housing - it had been torqued up correctly but not seated straight so a small amount of oil was leaking from the back!

Really annoyed as this sort of service is not what I'd want from a main dealer!

Indy from now on. Fortunately I've just found a good one through recommendation. It's a bit a drive but worth it for peace of mind.

Sloppy work really annoys me, especially when you are paying main dealer rates.

I had some paintwork damage repaired at my main dealer a few years back - they paint looked like orange peel.  They didn't seem too bothered that they had let me collect the vehicle without spotting their error.

Anyone could do this, Its literally pinched the seal seal slightly and thats the result.  Your specialist could even do it.  If you worked in a Garage you would see it happen with far worse than a little dribble of oil once in a while lol.  Try 3 litres of oil lost from being driven from one side to the other of workshop due to cover not being seated properly.

I know what you are saying but when I double checked (after my first post) it was clearly visible that it was sitting offset.

If I could see it with an untrained eye and the Indy spotted it without me saying where I thought it was coming from (literally looked under the bonnet and pointed to it) then you'd expect a main dealer service to spot what they'd done. You could see part of the thread!

Further update - I emailed the dealer to express my disappointment.

They asked for the invoice and have now paid me back for my costs, along with a free litre of oil for topping up and a free oil service next time one is due by way of an apology.

Can't fault the customer service follow up.
