The E53 does not have swirl flaps.  It was a Euro 3 approved vehicle and never had these evil widgets fitted.  Several members here checked carefully and no one has ever found one equipped with them.

It is possible that the X5 was the only M57N car not to use them.  Our E46 certainly has the later version released after the 'problems' with the Mk1.

Don't worry about the beer........Sanj probably sipped it already.... :))

Unfortunately the E70 and newer do have them.

Guys took car into garage as egr issue

Guy said that it's ok blocking the vacuum hose but to be careful as swirl flaps may break

Told him car doesn't have them he states they do.... He is a very good mechanic and knows his stuff so a little confused now

Any ideas he is happy to break the flaps for me at no cost whilst changing egr

But just confused as does car have the swirl flaps or not?

Sorry to be a pain but is that 100%

Mechanic was more concerned that as I have blocked egr vacuum hose as egr faulty he didn't want swirl flaps to break and enter engine

If it's ok then I'll leave egr valve for a bit

Any ideas why car has a low dump valve sound since egr hose blanked???

No one on this forum has yet reported having them.

If you look up your car on Realoem you will find that the intake manifold for your car does not have the words 'with flap control'.

No E53 in the UK has swirl flaps on either the 184 or 218bhp variant fitted at build.

You can check for yourself by looking under the manifold for the control rods and metalwork.  It won't be there.

I had mine blanked off for years,no dump valve type noise!Maybe you have a disconnected vacuum or inlet pipe!
You should source another mechanic!Unless your x5 has a donor engine transplant from an E46/E39,you do not have swirl flaps! He should know that if ever worked on X5 3.0D!
As to him being concerned that blocking the EGR could result in breaking of swirl flaps ,then you tell him that its the soot build up from EGR being opened that is partly responsible for them breaking .as well as the metal screws that unscrew themselves!Just get a mechanic that knows his "stuff":)
