License plate / frame removal

Hi all,

This going to sound lame, but how difficult / easy is it to remove the license plate?  My x5 has the black frames with the plate mounted without screws in it.

Has the plate been stuck down or is there a special knack to getting them off?  I can't see anything useful on google from the countless useless US number plate posts.

I know most, if not a few of you must have private plates on your x5s and was wondering if you DIY'd it, or took the lazy option of dealer.

Thanks in advance.

I used special double sided tape from one or other of the motor factors.  Try a hairdryer to warm it up and loosen the glue a bit to see it it will lift off more easily.

If re-applying then use Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) to clean the paintwork behind as it leaves no residue.  Maplin sell it and make sure you read all the warning labels as it's kinda flammable.  I always use it outside.

You can also use the sticky pads used to hold mirrors to windscreens as adhesive mounting pads, but for them you MUST warm them and the metal/plastic painted surfaces first and you really ought to use IPA to clean beforehand.

if you have a pic, some of the no plate holders the plate will come out by moving the black plastic back, if the type that have writing along the bottom the writting part removes and allows the plate to come out
