expected mpg

I currently have a 30d x5 on order just wondered what sort of mpg people are getting on general driving cant believe the brochures.

Can't help with the F15 X5 but certainly my X6 40D is about 15% lower that the 'official' figures.  Our Mini is 30% out - and is going shortly because of it (and it's a very common owners complaint, not that Mini seem to care).  I would expect anywhere between 10% - 20% under error which is unforgivable but that just shows how crap the 'official' tests are.

cheers richard after having the disco 4 whose fuel figures where very optimistic fuel computer was also very inaccurate  showing better mpg than actual.

The Audi i have is quite frugal but was going to sell that if the x5 was as good on fuel as the figures suggest so will have to wait and see

I know but always been without two cars for a while now and one car would make sense, my brother is car daft and has a defender new range rover sport and a golf R so always have a fall back if i need another car

I do not know why everyone says the fuel econ figs are wrong, I have a 40d, I easily get the stated figs, I do not drive like an idiot but correctly. I purchased it new and have only covered 13k so it will be tight.

I went from Crewe to the NEC on Monday and back, 110 miles and it averaged 40.9 - this I think is good and I am happy with the consumption.

I had a V8 before and could only manage 14mpg.

You could be the exception.  Most fail to get near the official figure due to the fact the cars are tested on rolling roads and not in real conditions.  I myself drive with an unhealthy obsession towards high mpg.  On a resent motorway trip, averaging 75mph I managed 34mpg, however my daily trip is to work on A roads, with a cruising speed of 55 mph and only see 31-32mpg.  If I do any short trips, or town driving the mpg drops to 26-28mpg.

To the OP I would say that you shouldn't plan on achieving official figures and as X5Sport suggests, aim on seeing a return of 20ish below.  This is subject to your own style of driving.

I filled up my f15 30d on 30th December, and have about half a tank left.

I think from memory that the av consumption is showing 23 mpg... possibly 22.8. I'll check it next time i'm in the car. Virtually all that driving is stop start short journeys, max 20 minutes, nothing over 40 mph.

Only comparison I could give is that my old e70 X5 35d (4 year old) was returning 18mpg on similar use, so a significant improvement in percentage terms! Bear that in mind if others quote you figures on their E70, although the waters are somewhat muddied depending on the exact model - eg 6 speed vs 8 speed.

I'm getting 32mpg in a 3.0d msport mainly in eco pro mode. It's still running in, but for comparison the same journeys gave me 38mpg in my f11 520d, so it's doing pretty well. Same journeys in my disco4 hse averaged about 20mpg, run in!

You're going to love it. Easily the best car I've owned and way better than some of the English 'comics' suggest.

I read an article once on mpg testing and car manufacturers only have to fit wheels/tyres in the middle of there range so no 20's or 21's with wide tyres will get tested.

So took my car for a run this weekend - down to Bath (then a bit of running around) then back home. All in all approx 300 miles, 260 of which were the trip up and down.
I got 31 mpg on the way down. This dropped to 29 while down there due to the running around and recovered to 32.9 by the time I got all the way home.

Some of the driving was in Ecop-Pro, but I've concluded that Eco-Pro doesn't make much difference if you drive at 85 mph, other than having an annoying habit of telling you to slow down or lift your foot off the accelerator  O:-)

The car was fully laden, (as we were away for a night the wife made sure to pack the kitchen sink) as well as the kids and the dog. The motorway driving was not at an economical speed and the running around was with a heavy left foot 

All in all I would say the mpg is definitely better than my old 35d (e70) by at least 10%. It doesnt matter a great deal to me because my annual mileage is very low, but more relevant for those going further.

Other comments:
having now spent 2.75 hours in the driving seat at the one "sitting" I would also say the sports seats in the new car are more comfortable than in the old one. I used to get a sore back and have to move around after a couple of hours in the old one. This one felt supportively good all the way through.

Theyve changed the way the cruise control works - I can't really say how, but it's less easy to use in my opinion, in terms of setting a new speed after youve been using it. I may just be getting old. Also the way the music system searches the in car hard disk is slightly different too, so at the moment its less intuitive for me.

Otherwise, have to say I'm very happy with the car, though it definitely needs a wash now.

The difference between 65 mph and 85 mph makes a massive difference on economy I think - pushing a brick through the air must be difficult!!!!

I find that journeys from cold are the main killer of good economy.  If the engine is warm then short journeys aren't too bad.  My 2010 35d only gets anywhere near the official figures on motorway type roads with free flowing traffic.
