But real issue is the power steering is dead, so literally cannot drive it.
Please tell me it just needs a new battery?

Sorry guys, I'm clearly half asleep. The car is starting - everything works except for the power steering

Fluid level OK? Belt drive broken? If the alternator light is on then that might also indicate a snapped accessory drive belt.

So an update:
1. The recall was for the pulley BOLT and not the belt
2. The BOLT on my X5 has SNAPPED straight off
3. Have spoken with Sytner Solihull, will be taken there for them to inspect
4. If BMW accept it is the same fault, they will repair for free
Any reason why they wouldnt pay ladies and gents?

Is the recall still outstanding or have you already had it done?
I would be very surprised if they do not do it for you foc

If it's the modified bolt that has failed they should cover it , if they won't speak to BMW directly before agreeing to pay .
Good luck

I wish I could tell you it is just the battery, but the truth is that a car just isn't that simple most of the time. I will admit that the solution may be that simple, but cars can be complex pieces of equipment. I would check the belts because it is possible that the belt running the alternator and power steering may have broken, or it may be so old that it has gotten loose. I would point toward that first. If it isn't the belt, it may be an alternator problem as it is not charging the battery or supplying power to the rest of the vehicle. If these aren't a problem, you will most likely have to take the car to the shop and have a professional take a look at it for you.
