Advice on purchase of 1st X5

Post by AMck » Sun Jan 19, 2014 11:24 pm

Hi, today I have put a deposit (refundable) on a X5 to hold it until I can view later this week.

I would welcome any thoughts on whether there is anything obvious missing from the specification - full details of the spec below. This is mainly going to be driven by my wife and she was insistent on having the sd model - likes a bit of speed. Is this version of the engine any more problematic?
How do these engines wear mileage - the one we are looking at is 1 owner and has 120k with full BMWSH. Would like lower miles but that puts them outside our budget.

The other options on this one that particularly like are colour combination and the comfort seats with bum warmers (even in the back for our son!), sports package with sport settings on suspension and nav system with reverse camera.

What should I be looking or listening for when we go and test it? From the photos it looks pretty clean, inside and outside.

Am I correct in thinking, although it doesn't specifically state media package, the options include everything that would be in the media package?

What sort of price would be fair for this vehicle?

Thanks

It's got a reasonable spec, just make sure you test everything and that it all works!

I'd say that you're probably looking at 8-10k for something of that age and spec, it's got over average mileage so you may be able to play with the figure a bit.

For a seven year old one with one hundred and twenty thousand miles, I'd say so.

Its what Glass' guide shows as its CAP

Please tell me where you can buy one for that amount!!
I have done a lot of searching and the cheapest E70 I have come across would be around 13K and that is usually mileage closer to 200k and normally ex police. so will usually be lacking the refinements and often the sat nav I-drive screens and normally the lower powered engine. This one is the sd.
Even at auction I've not seen that cheap.

Not saying I could buy one for that, but what the Glass guide states as a rough guide.

Obviously depends on the condition, a 120k car could still be immaculate if looked after.

On the other hand it could be a real dog, as the average mileage is 12k per year it's over mileage by 3 years so that will detract from its value a bit.

How much are you paying for it?

**Just had a look on AutoTrader and it shows a 2009 model with 200k for £12,495 which would make my quote about right for the trade in price, which is what I'd barter from**

I didn't realise joe public could now access the CAP valuations - but it seems you can :) So these are the figures I get from them.  This is for the standard 3.0sd SE without any allowance made for the options, which I think are about £7,000 worth. I do realise the value of options is significantly reduced when related to 2nd hand values, but would, I'm sure add a few hundred to price?

Average dealer retail  £16,400 - £17,950
Private sale price  £15,950 - £16,650
Trade in clean  £12,750 - £13,650
Trade in average  £11,950 - £12,750
Trade in below £11,050 - £11,750

I know the car you are referring to for 12,495. It is an ex police vehicle with cloth interior and standard seats, although with some other options like xenons and adaptive drive.

have to say i usually value cars low but all e70s as you say are 13k+ i would never have an expolice car either,
i would say 13-15k would be what it would be priced at

Ex-Police vehicles will have had some of the best running gear maintenance on them, usually no expense spared, but the interior will have been in hard use.  Forces that have them will have got their monies worth and they would have been mostly used three shifts a day, every day.

When we bought our E70 3.0d two month ago a 57 plate with 130K, 1 owner, full BMW history and all the right spec was still going for about 14-15K.
There is a 2009 ex authorities E70 on the auto trader at the moment for 12.5K but it does have 200k on it and a very very low level of spec.

Our 6 year old X5 now has 133k on it and its still on the original dpf, that tells me its spent most of its life going up and down the motorway at running temperature.
The engine is probably in much better condition than a 6 year old  X5 with only 30k on it that just goes to the shops and back.
