2nd & 3rd car insurance
2nd & 3rd car insurance
Hi, I am mulling over buying a 3.0 z4 for the summertime and wondered how people go about insuring them as a secondary vehicle. I have 14 years no claims for my current car but I assume I would have to start from scratch for the 2nd vehicle.
I would only be looking to add 2-3k miles as it would be a bit of a toy but I wondered, do insurers heavily discount 2nd cars?
Are there any specialist insurance companys who cater for this kind of thing?
I am also thinking of getting a cheap van for work, would a fleet policy be best?
Thanks

Re: 2nd & 3rd car insurance
Admiral used to do a special multi-car policy, don't know if it's still available .
Otherwise I've used Adrian Flux when I was living in UK .
And if ur member BMWCCGB they have several special insurance plans on offer

admiral do a multi car policy - although its not very special... or cheap and they bump your quote up for non fault accidents. Chiefs.

Re: 2nd & 3rd car insurance
I think Aviva and Directline are now offering multicar schemes too.
Used Admiral for three cars two years back. We put one car into storage and Admiral refused to cover it so whacked up the costs because we now only had two cars.
Lesson learned. All now on separate (and cheaper) policies.

Re: 2nd & 3rd car insurance
My experience is the multicar policies are expensive.
I have my X3, Corvette and Monkeybike on separate policies as worked out nearly half the price of a supposed discounted multi policy.

Re: 2nd & 3rd car insurance
Hi, we have 4 cars in household and although multicast sound good it's best to check prices, as I have found cheaper separately.
Also when say you take 1 car off a 3 car policy the price for the two goes up. I guess more risk as the remaining 2 are being used more.
But it's easy to do say you have 2cars and want to add a 3rd car watch out as the additional cars are insured up to the renewal date of the 1st car on the policy. When the 1st car renewal comes up the actual renewal is for all 3 cars on the policy. So more money to pay out at once.
When I wanted to insure the 2nd car the new company gave introductory discount and said if stayed after a year then they would give me 5yrs discount which was good.
So it's worth shopping around before deciding.

Re: 2nd & 3rd car insurance
Like with any insurance policy, be it vehicle/property etc etc always do your homework, I'm with admiral multi-car, when the renewal came through it was very competitive with others I checked, but I still told them it was too dear.
Ended up with a cracking deal off them.
Same happened with insurance for our rental properties, renewal was dearer than last year, simply said I would go elsewhere if they didn't match, or indeed, beat another quote I had, they did, result.
They all need your business, that's what they're there for, always haggle hard or walk away.

Re: 2nd & 3rd car insurance
Go to a specialist insurer/broker and they can tend to match your ncb from your main car policy.
My lotus is with reis and they provide a brilliant service, not sure a Z4 is specialist enough though
If just a weekend toy id be looking at something more exciting than a Z4!!!

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately can't afford anything more exciting so it'll have to do

Re: 2nd & 3rd car insurance
My fully comp policy on the x5 with admiral multicar is under 300 protected - obviously full n c d the wife's z3 sensible money too though ncd still applies for each car so if I added another I would start at full cost premium less any inception discounts
I am a forty something though ;
You could consider older vehicle and a classic policy or modern classic policy as classic policies don't factor ncd but instead priced on likely risk of you and the car .... You won't accumulate ncd though

When I got a second vehicle I had to start with zero NCB, but the company (Admiral) did take into account my full NCB with my main car and gave me a good discount. If you use the comparison sites for insurance then you have to state no NCB for the second car, so it is worth while ringing the companies direct.
I had 3 cars on an Admiral multicar policy and got a great price for all 3. When it came to renewal time it was cheaper to insure the cars with other companies individually. Admiral seem to get you on their books with a good price and then hike it at renewal time hoping you will not leave them!
