Tough one to call. I owned a d4 hse, and a d3 hse before that and they were both better than the previous gen x5 (IMO).

The 3rd row seats and practicality will top the f15 but if u don't need a sizeable 3rd row, or wardrobe carrying capabilities then the x5 will be fine.

The ride comfort is way better in the d4 than e70, and a bit better than the f15, due to the full air suspension, and non rft's. On the other hand the f15 will kill it going fast into a bend. As I'm sure you know, the discos wallow somewhat.

Tech is WAY better on the f15, and the cabin IMO is a nicer place to be, which is what swung it for me. No Active Cruise is a deal breaker. The f15 is also faster and cheaper to run. Comfort seats in the x5 are better than the hse seats on the d4, and the pano roof way better than the 2 fixed sunroofs on the disco's.

Reliability wins out on the x5, based on my experience. The d4 was prone to numerous faults that the dealers couldn't fix. I've owned 7 BMW and the only issues I can recall were song info not displaying in DAB, which was fixed with a SW update, and an Acc  issue that seemed to right itself.

Off-road and snow the d4 wins hands down. I had all seasons on the d4 and it could tackle any snow or ice, even steep hills. My f10 with winter tyres struggles up our hill in snow. The d4 with AS could have towed it ;)
How long was your f15 test drive?

That's good going ...........I am sure there are a few of us who would love to be able to claim having enjoyed similar records of reliability  :)

Can only speak as I find, but hopefully not tempting fate. I had enough bad luck with the landrover to bring me back to BMW.

Sometimes difficult to make appropriate inference via a keyboard but I genuinely hope your positive BMW experience continues :)

had the F15 for best part of the day enjoyed the drive, i did like the D4 i had two of them but with the model due a huge change either this or next i though i would try the x5

I very few problems with the D4 the worst kept it off the road for 6 weeks nothing serious just the link between the surround cameras and the park distance

i too found the seats in the D 4 not the most comfortable on a long journey even though the ride quality was fantastic

still a little nervous about the lack of off road ability but hey ho with the cheaper running costs road tax etc think im looking forward to it

Stuck in snow ? What are you people doing.? I had 4.8 iS with winters and NEVER got stuck anywhere with snow. I cannot see The disco being better than an X5 in the snow if the  correct tyres are fitted.
If you are talking proper off road then maybe, but on road or unmade roads I challenge ANY disco to a snow contest and it will not win.....period.
Do you people think that they dont get snow in Germany ? BMW do severe weather testing in the arctic circle and have a testing program that runs for 6 -9 months at a time specifically for winter conditions. Its all Landrover hype.................and I do know, my BMW works.
With a Land rover when you go out, you have a direction in mind, with a BMW you have a destination in mind...........!!!!
Land rover, over priced, over rated, from over here. Not for me thanks.

You will enjoy your BMM and wonder why you ever wasted any money on a Land Rover.
Don't fall for the scaremongers...........

Regards,

Nat.

As above in snow or ice its all about the tyres, an X5 on summer 20" tyres is useless while a set of smaller winters transforms it. Still won't have the off road ability of a LandRover but how many of us are truly going to need that?

I have an msport f15 on order. Have owned 3 x series and test driven the f15. As stated I owned a disco 3 and 4, so am in a stronger position than most to comment between the 2.

If you think the x5 will be better than the disco in snow you're delusional regardless of the tread pattern. I prefer the new x5 to the disco but I would take your challenge in a heartbeat, and spend the winnings on some winter wheels for my new x5 :) might even give you a handicap and put all seasons on the disco to make it fair. The deeper the snow, the greater the disco will perform relatively.

Personally I'm hoping and fairly confident that the f15 with All Seasons will be good enough for the amount of snow we get in the UK. Winter tyres aren't the be all and end all of traction in snow. My f11 shod with vredestein xtreme tyres is pretty average in snow and has been beaten on hills that the disco didn't even spin a wheel, and the disco had AS.
For the record, never been stuck in snow in any of my x5's but wheels have spun (AS tyres).

To the OP- reckon you'll be very happy with your choice. When is it due for delivery? Mines a couple of weeks away, hopefully before we get any snow.

hi mine is due march already handed the disco in needed taxed and service for jan so thought why not and the price i got was more than i expected.

looking to buy a spare set of wheels with different tyres on for the winter.

Like you say the disco would not even spin a wheel but time for a change and i sure the x5 will pull the caravan no bother and for the amount of time it will be off road it will be great.
