Hi

Had to do the school run this morning and thought it wouldn't be too bad. Came down a steep hill and used my HDC. Apart from the usual judder I thought everything was fine and let it do it's stuff with no foot on brake or accelerator. I almost wet my pants when the car started to slide and I ended up going diagonally down loosing total control for about 30 feet. It was really scary and I only ended up stopping as I hit the package and came to a halt. Probably stuffed the alloys. Have not got the snow socks yet as they haven't been delivered so far

I keep wondering what a may have done wrong. I've used HDC before and it's got me out of a jam but this time no help for me. I'm running diamaris on back and toyo proxy's on front.

Also the fuel consumption is rubbish as showing 12.7

Thats bad news, don't know why it would start to do that unless one of the DSC sensors is playing up?

Also, both your Consumption 1 and Consumption 2 are the same so its either been reset very recently or your battery has been disconnected... easy to get them crap figures if it has just been reset and you do a little school run.

Your right I did reset before I set off. I hope it was just a one off re the poss sensor issue. I set off at 7.30 and with the state of this traffic I'm still about an hour away from home

If the road is slippery enough and steep enough, it will slide when gravity takes over. HDC, ABS and winter tyres (with much better grip) will all help push the limits higher but won't ultimately stop it. Chains/socks will help but a real pain to take on and off for a short stretch - and trash your clothes.
It might be worth checking your ABS is working on a deserted bit of road as locked wheels are often the worst culprit for downhill slides.

How do I check ABS? Is it a sharp stop and I should feel a judder/ pulse through the brake peddle ?

Sorry if that sounds stupid but I make no excuses for asking as if you don't ask you'll never learn right! Lol

Yeah you should feel brake judder through the pedal and it will make a sort of grinding sound...

Did the school run this morning as well as my daughter only passed her test a month ago.

Took the X5 on winter tyres and it was great, sorry Penny

Earlier in the year, my X5 on summer tyres slid down my drive which has a tiny incline. Knowing Purley pretty well, I am aware of some hills that would certainly challenge any car on summer tyres.

Good luck though, I know how horrible it is traveling through this sort of weather on the wrong shoes.

As Turks said, at a low speed (20mph ish) do an emergency stop and you should feel a clear judder - this is the feel of the brakes being applied and released a number of times a second. The theory (and practice) is that a decelerating wheel is far more efficient at stopping than a locked wheel which is simply a friction pad ( and when there is little grip it is very inefficient). It also allows you to steer.

Oh I so wish I had the winter tyres. I thought the snow might be worse where you are? Purley was not too bad it was Kenley that was bad and that's where he goes to school. Just got a text to say they are closing early as well. I've told the little blighter to get the bus halfway as I'm so mean.

Hi Penny.

If your going to test the ABS by doing an emergency stop make sure that everything is tied down or the car is empty........no dogs in the car either. If your on a dry road these cars have a hell of a lot of stopping power! In this weather probably best to find a large empty road or a carpark.

On another note.....ironically in this weather the cars would be better off without ABS as with a locked wheel you get a build up of snow and ice in front of the wheel which helps you stop.

Its still quite difficult to stop 2.5tonnes of car in this weather. I have my winter tyres on and still managed to loose control under breaking on an icy road.......quite worrying as i came upto a T junction with someones new 330i parked opposite........took my foot off the brake turned the wheels and was glad i got traction back!

Oh and im currently getting 17mpg driving around London.......thank god i didnt get the 4.8!

Thanks for that. I've not had enough practice of driving in the snow and could do with a few pointers

Reference the emergency stop I was going to wait until my husband took off his seatbelt! Lol
