I happened to notice that with the ignition on (but engine not running) the fuel pump (at the rear) seems to run continuously (and quite loudly) for a whole minute. I can hear fuel being returned to the tank. I would have expected it to run for only a second or 2 and then shut off. Am I right? Would any kind E53 diesel owner please try the same on theirs and have a listen at the back to see if the pump shuts off or keeps running for a minute?
Many thanks.

are you sure its not the air compressor running when ignition is switched on? mine seems to run for a while in this situation esp if the car has been parked on any sort of sideways incline, its just the sensors trying to sort out which way the car is levelled i think.

Fairly sure it's a fuel pump as I can hear fuel splashing in the tank all the time it is running.
