Knocking / ticking noise

Hullo
posted this on Xoutpost (http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forum/x ... noise.html) but limited replies due to USA running mainly petrol units and for the life of me couldn't remember this site's new address until X5Sport offered his suggestion.
Anyway, here goes ;
Just noticed a noise on cold start of my 3.0D UK 2006 model 95,000 miles.
It seems to be coming from the bottom left side of engine bay / near passenger footwell. Its not a loud noise more of a whoosh with a tick. It happens immediately on cold start up and if you sit on idle and slowly rev up it quickens in time with revs and then disapears (around 1200rpm). Once the X5 is warm you cannot hear it.
I know about webasto pre heater and its not that, I've heard that kicking in and running ok.
Suppose just concerned its not water pump or timing issues, def do not want to have a costly repair by not catching something early.
BTW just had oil service using 5w 30 fully synthetic and filter by dealership before I noticed noise, now I hear it. Its def the correct oil and work was done properly.
Any thoughts on possible causes appreciated. Probablly just being paranoid, hearing noises that are not there
