What does it actually do pls guys? i dont have the AUX HEATING  ive only got the AUX VENT,

ive noticed that when the weathers cold and i flick the ignition on and the dash says PRE-HEATING ? is this warming up the glow plugs for a easier start?
should i wait for the message to disappear before cranking?

Yes, those are the glow plugs getting their current to pre-heat them. Wait until the message goes off again, then start. Otherwise starting will be more difficult.

Not sure about the E53 diesel but on the E70 the engine start sequence doesn't go through until the glow plug symbol in the dash goes off.

You dont have to wait for anything in the E53. You should though!

If the Pre-Heating message is displayed then you should wait for it to go out otherwise the diesel will be too viscous and will struggle to start.

Not my quote but 12 seconds is what I've heard - I always wait though.

Peace of mind and all that. The aux heater being used in advance of startup will also help.

cheers guys, unfortunately i dont have the aux heating option so that ideas out of the window, but i have noticed that on the 1 occasion when i didnt wait for the pre heating message to clear and i tried to start her, she seemed to struggle (or should i say just cranked over a tiny bit longer), i suppose theres no harm in waiting a few xtra secs for the message to clear
