3.0d Auto holding on to gears.

Hi, I have just bought are first auto, a 57 plate X5 3.0d.
I have noticed when I drive down my road or go into our car park at work the gearbox seems to hold just over 2k rpm and wont change, I am used to driving a 3 series manual with the same engine and at 2k I would change gear due to the high low down torque it had.
A guy at work also had a 57 plate 530d auto and he said compared to other auto's he had driven the BMW also held the gears longer, I am guessing this could be normal?

Thanks in advance, Martin

The E53 with the similar 1st gen 6spd box certainly did.  You could get it to hold by gently touching the brakes and after a few seconds the box would change to give you engine braking.

Great for going downhill in a 30 limit as I found I didn't need the brakes once the speed had been held for a short time.

There is a way of resetting the gearbox trough a combination of moves with throttle etc I just can't remember what it is, I did it on my old 535

I see you've posted on bmwland so hopefully will remember on there or do a search.

Failing that pm Oli over there because he told me!
I haven't tried that yet, from memory its ignition on with no engine running and you then hold down the throttle for 20-30 seconds to reset the gearbox.

When its holding the gear if you back off the throttle* / step off it quite abruptly, does it change up?

*if safe to do so
From memory I think it stays there, I think its fairly normal as a guy at work had the same year 530d and he said his drove the same compared to other auto's he has driven, I also posted the same question on BMWland and got this:-

Yes - normal.

A typical BMW trait.

If you wish you can intervene using the Sport/Steptronic mode.

But generally speaking the car knows best and it's usually only when on the over-run with foot off the pedal.

It does sound normal enough.

I usually can get mine to change up with a brief on/off of the throttle if I needed it too. But mostly I let it to what it wants!  :)

On an unrelated point, wow! Bmwland, there is a blast from the past. Haven't posted there in ages!

I remember signing up when it was first launched!
I used BMWland when we had our 320d/325d. I still go on there from time to time, I have actually set up a group buy on there with Ecotune for DPF delete kits. We removed the DPf on our 2007 325d and I plan to do the same on our 57 plate X5 3.0d.

I recalled your username from there when I first joined here.  I used to keep in touch with Oli, Peter, etc also a few from bmw5 from my 5 series owning days.
