Autocar road test

50d road tested in autocar this week

Haven't read it full yet but in summary it only got 3.5 stars and placed in 3rd place

Beaten (I'm not surprised) by the cayenne s diesel (v8) with 4 stars and the RRS V8 diesel (the only engine to buy if you must go to the dirty pumps) with 4.5 stars.

Confirms my thoughts that BMW are loosing their way.

Hi,

I've not read it, but have been in a 50d. It really is very good, but comes with a hefty price tag . Can't comment on the cayenne, not been in one and not sure on the price comparison , but one thing I do know is I'd rather drive my daughters ford Ka than a range rover. Its the same old argument, irrespective of all the hype ( or spin ) there is a reason why they never use anything Land Rover where it matters..........in those places they use land Cruisers and Nissans.
There is also a very good  reason anything Land Rover is at the bottom of the JD power survey........

Having a good engine does not make a good car. Take cadillac sts...........monster north star V8 that only need a service every 100,000 miles.........unfortunately in  a very average car. Also E46 M3......numerous comparisons with all sorts of stuff and was generaly behind on the power stakes, yet trounced everything in its path as a car.

Autocar or any other article is just an opinion................and its not the same as mine.

He only reads things that agree with his own opinion......and the word is losing, not loosing...  ::)

I wasn't impressed with the 50d except it was very rapid, but having run a fleet of Landrovers there is no way I would run one or buy it with my own money.  And the Porker is just plain ugly.

All IMHO of course......

in fairness that argument cant be used as how many x5s and cayennes do you see where it matters...none all these cars ffrr, rrs, x5, x6(for gay potential x5 drivers mainly found in pink), cayenne etc are built for urban use and to mount curbs outside of schools, defenders on the other hand are used in remote places, maybe not as common as landcruiser and nissans but are used, also have you driven a land cruiser and seen the price of them, there awful stone age barges with a thirst for fuel, just my opinion

Horses for courses.  The RRS in V6 was a very nice ride, IMO better than in the X5.  And, with a 3 year service warranty thrown in on a car we will trade up in 2 years anyway, represented a good deal.  The new model really is very different from the outgoing one.  My choice would still be the S/C RR as the V8 drove big and not very keenly.  Anyway, 535d boy has lost all the sensation in his backside from years driving Lotii so he's no help.
Sometimes you meet people who have had 'Car X' for years and years and never had an issue; others have same model and nothing but issues - go figure.  Anyway my neighbour has a Cayenne so they are gay, full stop.

I read the report and could see why they came to that conclusion , in fairness they did say they looked forward to testing less overpriced derivatives and suspected they might be the sweet spot of the range. I've ordered a 4.0d Msport with a few toys and recon for the price it is a great option.

I'm concerned that as I don't read or feature in Hello or OK I'm not in the RRS demographic  ::)

What Car did a test last month, X5 30d came a very close second to the RRS, marked down a little on the ride quality compared to the ultra smooth RRS. Much better economy, CO2 and buying price were pluses for the X5.

Likewise Autoexpress, another close run thing.

Not sure 535d boy is being completely representative.

No, really !?!?

Everybody wants different things out of their cars.

Before I bought the X5 I tried the V8 diesel RRS which had just been launched.

As a driver I much preferred the x5 to the RRS. The RRS was a nice place to be if to do big miles on motorways but I don't hence I bought the X5

Now having driven both the roles have reversed and the RRS feels more sporty than the X5 and it is a nicer place to sit in. It is of course a fair bit more expensive  of course.
