X5 e70 sat Nav

Hi all,

I bought an x5 in July 2013 brand new from a dealer it had 7 miles on the clock. Since then I have been debating with them the effectiveness of the sat Nav (it is apparently the professional system). One of my questions to them was whether the lower information box on the map screen should contain the delay in your journey (e.g. 3+) if there is a delay. They have initially implied that as I have RTTI I should get this but they have failed in 3 weeks to confirm or deny this. Does any one have any view? I would also appreciate others people's views on the sat Nav because on my commute to work I am not sure it is that good

Firstly, welcome....

Secondly I think there a number of folks who believe that the BMW Satnav leaves a lot to be desired.  RTTI uses information from mobile phones and traffic flow cameras but like any system is subject to the quality of the data provided.

Another major issue with the BMW is the accuracy and quality of the underlying mapping data that BMW have specified in their database (never mind the excessive upgrade cost of more than £200 per disk set and licence key) and the postcode database and traffic data incorporation.

The older (pre-RTTI) version does add the delay time onto the ETA, but I find that the ETA is not especially accurate either.  It's not just the BMW one that suffers from this though as I had a VAG system that really only got the ETA right when within 5 minutes of home.  I don't know what algorithms they use but I suspect road speed data is not used, just current average speed and programmed distance remaining.

I know that on a regular run to my Parents (90 miles away) takes 90 minutes or less, but the nav thinks it's twenty minutes longer - even with no delays en route,.

It's a long winded way of saying yes it's flawed and could be better - especially given the 'Pro' flag and cost.

Okay so I am not alone in thinking I should stick my old sat Nav on the screen and get some traffic guidance back. The sat Nav does add the delay into ETA but I have seen screenshots of the lower information box saying RTTI, giving the ETA, miles to destination and the no of minutes delay. Mine shows all that but not the last item. Do yuo get that? It would be extremely useful to know this info because on my commute if it only said e.g. +2 I would not bother checking the details

I don't think so - from memory it just keeps changing the arrival time.

I think you are correct pvr the garage seem to think it might be a setting somewhere but I am not so sure

My wife's £100 Tom Tom has more functionality that my 2012 E70 sat nav and it is 5 years old.

Must admit that I don't use nav much but when I have the ETA has been spot on. Maybe I've been fortunate.

It still baffles me that manufacturers who spend millions on R&D to produce these amazing technologically advanced vehicles are still behind the curve from Navigation specialists like Garmin and TomTom.  Why they don't just collaborate with these people is beyond me?

In short the BMW Professional System is bloody expensive for the service it provides (and the amount I use it) the older system was much worse IMO for a start the one in my 3 series used a DVD disc that I used to constantly hear whizzing about.  But without it the car takes a severe kicking on the residuals and looks dire - had a rental in the US last week with no navigation or parking sensors (odd!)

And the databases all come from TeleAtlas and Navteq who are owned by said TomTom and Nokia I believe.

BMW offer their toys, and Garmin/TomTom & Nokia offer theirs but of course the latter don't integrate into the car systems and BMW probably want it that way thank you very much - along with all the other OEM nav system suppliers.

Fleet Lease cars frequently come in 'bargain basement' spec as it's too expensive for them to add the options in terms of resale as well as upfront.

I think one thing I was finding a bit odd was that I had an opinion but there was not a lot of visible comment anywhere saying similar things so I was beginning to assume it might be bust. I am in some ways relieved that I am hearing these comments.

Then again when I said my tom tom was better to my wife she did respond by saying "yes, but you wouldn't buy an X5 from tom tom so why do think a car manufacture can make sat navs". I am struggling with that apart from the cost makes our points valid!
