BMW Test day at Duxford
BMW Test day at Duxford
We went over to a Dealer organised event at Duxford on Sunday and had a play with a number of their cars.
The M5 saloon.....meh. Seemed fidgety at low speed, and too quick for it's own good when pushed.
The M3 saloon.....nicer than the M5 but still meh......
428i Coupe Auto......nice, but it's still a 3-series.
135i.......quick for such a small car, but not particularly practical for us......we're getting shot of the Mini as soon as we can in 2014.
X6 M50d......can't see what all the excitement is about really. Don't get me wrong, it's quick, but not enough of a difference from my 40d to make me want one. The power bulge is a nuisance for visibility. The engine does make a nice noise when pushed, but I still prefer the 40d version.
M6 Coupe......very quick but again impractical for us. And where would you be able to use the power. Like the M5, it didn't seem entirely comfortable at slower speeds.
640 GC MSport.....we both fell in love with it and it is actually more practical than I though it would be. Shame it's £90k with a decent spec as I think HRH has just found her next car..... . The diesels are less 'neck snapping' in their power delivery than the 'M' cars, so .i found them a nicer drive overall.
Overall it was useful to be able to have a go in so many different models. Would have tried some more but ran out of time.

Glad to see you that you agree with me at last!
BMW don't make anything exciting anymore but the 6GC is proper sexy!

Nice one Richard. Would love the chance do to the same. I like your honest reviews as so many people feel they have big up 'M' cars or feel they will be slatted. (That is not directed at you Robin.) in today's congested world, unless you can do regular track days, there are very few cars that you can get the most from on the open roads (legally) so a punchy diesel for me every time, comfortable and relaxing most of the time and capable when required.

I used to think like that too

Surely you can't break speed limits on the back of an AA truck can you?

It's not all about speed, Timothy. Thirst is nothing; image is everything. I used to be boring but I'm a little eccentric and warped in reality.....

I'm not sure what image you hope to project with an AM though? Footballer with money and no sense? Ferrari Wannabe? Wiener inadequacy? Mid Life crisis? Worst of all evils....an.....an....Investment Banker?

You've obviously never seen me play football.
I can do 2 keepy-uppies, uninterrupted. No, really.
At least I'm not a <spit> lawyer.

Re: BMW Test day at Duxford
All jesting a side, I would love an AM. Vantage for me please. But only if I had a sensiblish day to day car. I do too much mileage to justify running a sports car with sub 20 mpg. Regardless of being able to afford it, I just couldn't be bothered with filling up every other day.

Re: BMW Test day at Duxford
Very interesting read, thanks. I do like the 6GC - will seriously think about one (and a Skoda Yeti for when the snow comes) when it comes to replace the X5 (and our runaround 2nd car). 99% of the time, the 6GC would be fine for us. Touring and camping holidays would be a pain and I'm not sure I could bring myself to put a roof box or a trailer on the back of a 6GC although I'm sure it would be fine. Plus the pop-up seats in the X are very handy every couple of months. A nice dilema to have one day.

Re: BMW Test day at Duxford
Some of them are OK.......
Let us not forget we also have an X5 40d in the family fleet so I can indulge and still lug loads around if needed. The Vantage was a dedicated 2 seater so didn't go for that; despite the DB9 having minimal legroom its still flexible enough to drop the kids at school and watch all the yummy mummies.......
That GC is virtually the size of a 7 series. Never really liked the 6 shape myself.
