16:9 screen issue

Hello All

Please Help! I have a 2001 X5 with full sat nav, cd etc. it originally had the 4:3 screen with tape deck at the side. I have met with a guy locally who is selling a 16:9 widescreen version and know from looking through this site that it is straight forward to retrofit.

I met with the guy who had used it in his 7 series but it has been sitting in his gargage for a year. When we plugged it into my X5 the menu screen etc appears as normal but you can just make things out, the whole picture just constanly scrolls across the screen at an angle and varies from slow to fast!

When swapping back to the original it works perfect. We left the 16:9 monitor in the house for a week to warm up/dry out, if needed, but still no joy. I have been driving about for 2 days now and the problem has not got any better.

The guy assures me it was working fine and we have no other way to test if it is still ok or if the fault is with my car?

Any help what so ever would be much appreciated.

Have been told that disconnecting the battery for 5 mins may help? Will give this a go later today.

Thanks in advance

Gavin.

Not that this cure it but might be worth checking PAL/NTSC format - my work. Wild stab in the dark though...

When it scrolls slowly though, can you make out the menu?

Hello Sang

Not sure exactly how to do what you suggested?

I did disconnect the battery for 5 minutes this afternoon but that did not fix the problem.

When the scrolling goes slow you can just about make out the screen but think that is more the fact i am used to the menu screen from the old unit so know what each thing is. I managed to select the sat nav map when playing about and that came up pretty clear but still scrolling!!!???

Any help

Cheers again

Gav.

There's an option in the TV option but that's why I don't think it is your solution. As you get the problem ALL the time, not just on TV...

Select TV an then whilst a channel is displayed push down the right rotary knob and another menu should appear with option.

I think it may be useful to go back to basics.

You dont indicate whether you bought & now own the new 16:9 unit or not.

If you havent bought it then return same & start again

If you have bought it then ideally you need to test it in another car to ascertain if the unit is faulty or borrow or buy another 16:9 unit to test & see if 1st unit at fault or possibly another component. I suspect few here will have time of inclination to strip their cars to help you - though I may be wrong.

If 1st 16:9 unit found to be faulty & you have paid for it then either try to get money back or put it down to exprerience & sell as defective.

Other options may include you taking car to a professional & paying them to assist you. I would be very careful who you choose & if using a bmw independent I would ask plenty of q's to be sure they are competent to assist you, (main dealer may simply invite you to buy new unit & many independents more expert in oily bits). I dont know of any dedicated Sat nave repair or associated diagnosis experts though there was a guy on ebay called satnavtvman near Birmingham who specialised in retro fitting all this kit - alternatively he may know someone who can assist if you message him by ebay & assuming you can even find him.

Sorry I cant be more helpful but in abscence of someone offering better advice I think the above may be more realistic rather than second guessing the exact problem & in abscence of youi or others knowing how to sort same.

Hello

I have a 2001 BMW X5 which has a 4:3 sat nav screen in the dash with a
tape deck beside it. I had read that the newer widescreen type 16:9 is
just a plug and play conversion. I have bought a second hand screen
from a guy in Edinburgh who assures me was 100% working. After fitting
it into my car the menu screen just scrolls, fast and slow, making the
menu unreadable?

I have disconnected the sat nav cd driver and reconnected, tried
disconnecting battery for 5 mins and still no luck!

I ordered a the latest sat nav discs and the guy who i ordered then
from supplied a software download and then upload disc to the latest
software incase the unit (screen) and car were confused with 2
different software versions.

Hoping you have had similar issues and would be able to assist,
fingers are crossed.

Any advice would be great.

Much appreciated

Gavin

Gavin,

Thanks for clarifying.

I'm sorry but I cant add anything else to my prior post albeit now you have clarified ownership you can disregard advice based on possibility of you not owning it.
