Hi,

Sorry new to the forum and to owning an X5. Have tried to search for a relevant topics but cant seem to find any.

Bought the car with the following error code:

55 Combustion Failure Cylinder 3 detected

Now the issue is I cannot seem to work out which cylinder number 3 is, all the details I have found online are for the US versions. I have the 2003 X5 4.6 V8 Carbon Edition. The US version has cylinders 1-4 on the righthand side of the engine bay looking in from the front bumper. Numbered 1 nearest the bumper and 4 nearest the windscreen. Can anyone confirm this is the same for the UK model.

All spark plugs were changed as hadn't been done in a while, looking at swapping out the ignition coil on that cylinder. If that doesn't work is there anything else that is likely to be causing the issue?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi, again like you I'm not sure which cylinder it is and it looks like the web has solved the query.

it may worth a quick call to you local BMW service department  as they should know

HI,

You are correct. Number 1 cylinder is the one nearest the headlight on the LHS as you look into the engine bay . I.E. The drivers side on a UK RHD car.  That bank is 1-4 and the other bank is 5-8.
Id change the plug and the coil pack  as a start.

If you get really stuck, give Phil @ CPC a call, hes on 01494 766661.

Good luck
Regards,
Nat.

First thing to check is if it is a current live code or a throw back from an old fault..???

....and dont buy cheap coils. I spent weeks chasing a missfire. Turned out I had 6 out of 8 duff coils brand new from Euro CP..
