3.0i idle control valve and sterring angle sensor driving me mad

Post by willos » Tue Oct 15, 2013 5:53 pm

Having had the E53 for 8 months we can say its the best car weve had.    2 faults keep coming up.  The idle control valve stuck closed and the steering angle sensor.
Firstly how difficult is it to take off the ICV for a clean and inspection .
secondly the fault of steering angle sensor comes up.  I have the 1.4.0 fault reader and ive managed to have a look at the output from the sensor.  The constant 1 reading is constant at 153 and the constant 2 reading fluctuates around the 204 value.    Absolute angle and relative angle readings are around the 190 mark when they are the same when turning wheel but the wheels are not streering straight at this reading.
Can these be reset or is it a new sensor.
Having a range rover im no stranger to tools or getting down and dirty in an engine bay
#Thanks

hi there, im not familiar with the icv problem but my scanner has shown me the steering angle sensor fault for the last 3 years!
it says steering angle" implausible" or something like that. anyway the car has always driven just fine with no bad tyre wear etc, so i just leave it alone.
i thought it was something to do with the adaptive headlights, but they work fine as well.

sounds daft but is the steering wheel dead straight ahead...when driving straight?

When I first got mine it did the same, the tracking had beem altered so that the toe was correct but the wheel ever so slightly to the left of centre (say about 3 minutes to). I could have had the sensor ZEROED but chose to have the wheel re-centered. Problem never came back

May not be this of course but that was what was wrong with mine. Implausable angle as it thought I was steering left but travelling forwad

yes, one indicator of steering angle not set right is steering not being dead straight when driving straight.

in any case good to get the steering angle sensor reset (can't recall the procedure)

if that doesn't solve it you have to replace the sensor. i've had to do this when all else failed.

don't know about the other fault.

If steering isn't straight then that's the issue.

I tried re-calibrating my steering angle sensor using the scanner as I too kept getting the error. Couldn't do it and in the end had to get Jason to reset it properly using the proper diags tool. Sorted.

Yes will try an indy to reset it as it looks like it thinks its turning when its straight on.
The 1.4.0/1 scanner is good but it has its limitations, or can it reset the sensor without having to turn left right centre.  Might even get main stealers to do it for me.

Scanner couldnt do it. Jason could. Try him or your Indy before the stealers.
