Attempted theft.....

I have just returned home from holiday to find my X6 (04/10) sat on the drive with the drivers window smashed and the OBD port open.......horrible feeling not knowing if they failed to copy a key or were successful and are waiting for me to have the glass repaired before they return with the key and take it...... >:(

Really horrible feeling....don't know whether to wait it out and take the risk that they return or to trade it in before they have the opportunity????

If the car has had the Security Update done then they should not be able to code a new key.  Give the Dealer a ring and ask them if they can alter the keys so that any cloning that may have been done is removed.

I would think if they got that far they would have nicked it anyway......

Not nice at all though.  You could get the vehicle recovered to the Dealer which at least puts it somewhere secure.  A chat with the insurers will also give some guidance.

Hi, yeah it has had the security update done however I wasn't sure if this prevented to copying of keys or was just a comfort access mod. I have had the car recovered to my local main dealer by BMW Emergency Service, who were amazing BTW, I am having the glass replaced and will get them to check what keys are registered to the car.....should only by my original 2.....

The key cloning routines are in the Comfort Access system and the mod was alleged to have disabled the functions.

You should only have two keys and it may be possible to 'fill up' the spare slots - I think you can have a total of four keys - so no other keys can be added.  Just don't lose any keys!!

The thieves are probably trying cars to find one that has not been recalled and updated.  Are your insurers going to insist on a tracking device?

I haven't gone through my insurers so they don't know about it....it does have a tracker......also an iPhone hidden in the car with find my friends enabled.....so if they do take it I can track the container!!!! ;)

A cheaper option to that is a battery powered SIM card enabled gps tracker. I bought one off eBay and a SIM card with a fiver of free time for a quid up the swag shop. It's small and magnetic so can be hidden easily. It also has an iPhone app which alerts you and a built in GPS for about 70 quid I recall. Search gps tracker on eBay. They will generally look under wheel arch linings and the usual spots for trackers mind. But unlikely to keep on searching once they have found one......

Sorry to hear the news about the attempted theft, but glad you still have it.

I know this is a retro idea but is it worth having extra security like a physical deterrent like a disc lock, i have been using something similar since the issue of bmw's security came into question.

Alternatively an extra alarm fitted to your car might also deter these criminals.

I'm having a viper alarm fitted next week for this very reason, will put up a post when its done with a critique of the installers and the device itself.
