The great tyre debate... (20 inchers need only reply)

Before someone flames me, I did have a little search around the forum and I was somewhat overwhelmed with various posts about tyres, not to mention even more classified adverts selling various new/used rubber.

So with that in mind I thought I'd start a new topic and ask the wider community what tyres are you running on your 20in wheels?  My car has only done 5k miles and as recommended by a BMW technician I am running very slightly higher tyre pressures all round to try and stop the RFT trait of the tyres wearing on the outer edge.

However even then I can see there is more degradation of the tyre on the outer edge at just 5k miles and if I am honest the OEM Bridgestone rubber doesn't look likely to last more than 10k miles.  So how many miles are you all getting between tyres?  Have any of you tried other manufacturers RFT tyres (believe Dunlop offer a cheaper RFT tyre of the right size) and dare I say it has anyone strayed away from RFT, if so what are you using as do you have a spare wheel solution?

I have really cheapies running at .5 bar above label
No wear after 10000 miles so well happy so far..

No wear = no grip.  I'm just looking for a premium brand tyre alternative that carries a slightly smaller price tag, or marginally better wear characteristics.

On this forum?  We're not a Landrover/Range Rover Forum now.  I mean steady on...... :P

In answer to your question, I run 20" Dunlop Sportmaxx RFT on mine and the wear is even across all four.  All are run at OEM pressures.  Car now has 12k miles on it and the remaining tread is 4-5mm.

19's run Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow RFT for winter use, but you weren't asking about them......again at OEM pressure.

Thanks, are the Dunlop Sportmaxx much cheaper than the Bridgestones?  I have to say I am considering buying a set of 19in wheels. 

If I buy them it will be a mild winter, if I don't it's going to snow and linger for weeks ;)

What are the correct pressures for 20 inchers? I just got an E70 35D M sport last week so still getting used to it.

They are printed on a sticker inside the drivers door shut, can't remember off the top of my head.

Hi I had Bridgestone rft last set and got about 15k out of them. They had worn on the outer edge on the fronts and the inner edge on the rear. They would probably last longer depending on the type of driving, the misses uses the x6 mostly and that is just pottering about if it was motorway they would probably go a bit further. We have now got Yokohama non rfts on and they are great, rides improved, probably done 5k on them and seem to be wearing well but I did get a 4 wheel alignment done prior to fitting so that may of helped.

Interesting, I'd of thought Yoko's would of been prone to wear.  What spare wheel solution do you have?

I had dunlops on mine.

Lasted 12k

Just changed them all on my Audi at 9k though!!

My first post. I'm running Kumho Ecsta X3 non run flats at 40psi. While it gives a firm ride, I'd rather that than a soft ride, sacrifice handling and wearing out tyres early. 38,000 klms and probably another 5k to 10k klms before replacing. Handling is very good. Excellent on wet weather, gravel roads and rough bitumen.

Driving style is exuberant when on the open road. Long drives (800 to 2000 klms) account for about 30%, the balance is local driving. When it's time for replacing these tyres, I think I'll be using the same again.

I got rid of (i think Bridgestone) RFT's as soon as i could- one was about 5k miles after a sidewall incident with a kerb, and the rest after about 10k miles on the front and 12-13 on the rears.

I got Cooper Zeon 4XS on the fronts for a reasonable price, and Toyo Proxes ST on the rear.

I got the coopers as it was the cheapest the place had and i needed to get home. Did a bit of googling and found out they know own Avon, so was good enough for me. Although they only do them up to 275, and have also gone up quite a bit in price since i got them- towards 'premium' brand prices so will look at Hankook's when it comes time to change.

Both have lasted double the RFT. The 1st Cooper has a bout 3mm before ware bars, and the 2nd about 4-5.

Toyo's still look/feel brand new, much better ride and have no problems with grip. Were quite cheap as well, but again, these have gone up in price as well.
