Exterior blow over cost??
Exterior blow over cost??
Hi all
I haven't done any digging yet but how much roughly should an external paint job cost?
I've been quoted £550 for a full 3 stage detail but obviously there will be marks that even that won't budge so a blow over May be another way cost dependant...
Cheers

I would go for the detail a decent respray will cost thousands! You will be amazed at what a good detailer can do to your paint work.

Re: Exterior blow over cost??
Apart from stonechips and proper deep scratches the paintwork will be fully revived with full correction detail. I posted up as thread ages ago showing my mates M3 I detailed and it came up brand new looking tbh.
A full blow over will cost you upwards of £1500 for the whole motor.

If small chips they can be touched in and and excess paint flattened carefully prior to a detail - be careful as if you have t done it before you may do more harm than god - if chips really significant then a blow in to front may be better. Full bonnet respray circa 150-250 depending on your negotiating with a small but competent paint shop. A pro detailer or anyone on here who dabbles with chils and/or machine detailing will be able to advise best route to take

I've tried before with the cocktail stick and the results....have been rubbish. With a metallic it looks way too easy to go through the clear whilst trying to flatten. One chip that really annoys me but has not gone straight through is about the size of 1/5 a small finger nail. I touchd it up and sanded it and whilst not offensive is frankly far from blended

Tbh Mike, sounds like the best route is complete blow over if that many stonechips, etc. I've got a really nasty stone chip on the bonnet and there is no way to fill it etc as it's to bare metal... :'(
Respray required.....

I saw that one too, made me smile
I agree with Raj, a front end respray will be required as it is impossible to completely lose that amount of damage no matter what the vids on YouTube proclaim. It's easier on a flat colour but it comes down to how fussy you are.

I'll start budgeting for one , perhaps to include the front bumper. Probably leave it till spring what with the crp weather down the road and the motorway miles I do. Those damn wagons throw some sh!te out when it rains. Would £500 cover it?

Agreed, it's not worth it at this time of year unless you also budget for a front end venture shield protection kit or something. I might actually consider that in the new year for the bumper if I get it blown over again. Worked a great on an R32 I had previously.
£500 should cover a front end blow over.

I indicated prices I would expect to pay.........£150 a panel as a rule. Bonnets are bigger and require grill removal/masking but I wouldn't want to pay too much more than £300.......especially if paying cash to avoid hassles of card payment & card charges for the paint shop.
Some carefully used white spirit wiped over soft recent touched in paint can be useful......or Lanka if you want to spend more. I don't advise using anything & as such don't want to be responsible for damage caused.
Re chip avoidance - Adjusting following distances can make a difference..........I think I have only picked up 2 or 3 significant chips in over 60k miles of X5 ownership. I accept the car doesn't spend a lot of time on motorways but I do use them...........Other advantages of keeping distance include more reaction time, a better view ahead.............Oh and not having to wear a bra in public

Believe it or not I don't follow up the tailpipe and being a taller tank I agree the issues are mostly avoided.
Most chips I've had are from the sideways stuff that comeout from wagons, that's why (and it's my excuse) that even if they're in the 1st lane I pass in the 3rd. Hard to avoid the middle lane stuff and I do 14k a year.
The chips are no way as bad as when I had the compact e36, plus it's surprising what comes across the central reservation.
Thanks for the tips though
