Electric gate/garage opening 'thing' that sits in the roof lining (sort of)

I remember reading the in the manual, that there was a factory fitted optional extra that went up by the courtesy lights in the front headlining. It was basically some buttons that can be programmed to emit a signal that opened electric gates/garages etc.

I don’t have this option  :( and I did not need it  :) but now we have had a security gate fitted at work, and they have given us a ‘fob’ but I don’t like extra stuff, so I thought it would be cool if I could use the ‘thing’ to open the works gate…

Trouble is, I can’t remember what the ‘thing’ was called (manual is too far away to fetch to be honest)?

Can it be retrofitted easily, IE will the wiring be behind my blanking plate?

Anyone know what BMW reference number the part was listed as, I have looked on OEM BMW but I cannot find it, I have tried all the obvious routes, but I can’t find it (wish it had a search engine)

It can be retrofitted but if memory serves the system only supports 'Homelink' compatible systems?

Not sure of your model year, but it should be one of these.....remote mirror retrofit kit...... And you need one with 'GTO' included.

Hi

I retrofitted this for our gates and garage. Its a rearview mirror with three buttons on the underside that can be programmed for different functions. Its homelink compatible but also works with other systems that have a 'learn function'. Your x5 is already prewired - just buy the mirror and attach! The mirror itself is VERY expensive - over £600 (including compass function and autodimming) from bmw parts....maybe you can hunt a second hand one though? Mine cost only £200 brand new as they advertised at the wrong price and i badgered them until they let me have it.

Good luck!

OMG, I think for £600 I will carry the fob in the car  :o

I admit to seeing the mirror thing with the buttons (on OEM BMW) but I dismissed it as I could have swore it went where I have a blanking plate, on the unit that holds the interior lights, and electric sunroof switch.

Mines a 2003 4.6iS (with electric sunroof - not panoramic)

Either my memory serves me incorrect, so I will have to find my manual out, or it was different with a sunroof. May take a photo of where I 'thought' it lived

There are 2 homelink remote controls that can be fitted , 1 fitted in the rear view mirror and the
other in the overhead panel, both are pre wired, no coding required

Or you could do it my way for pennies.

Get the fob, 4 blobs of blu tac on bottom and stick it up where the buttons are on the mirror. Works really well for me.

I keep my fob in the sunglasses holder so it cant get accidentally hit and open my garage door when im driving off.

X MAN, thats the one, Thank you

Davyk31  :)

And I know X MAN has beat me to it, but I spent the time and patience taking the photos, and then uploading them to a site (that would not let me turn one around) so I am putting them on here anyway  >:D

This is where I want it to go:

this is where the idea came from (on its side) :

So, do we agree that the wiring WILL be behind my blanking plate ?

At them prices I think it will be an eBay breakers sale

It will be prewired so just need to locate the switch panel and factor in and coding that may be required.

May not need it but just in case really. Hopefully should be just plug and play as the switch panel should contain all the necessary gubbins.
