Auto box shifter noise
Auto box shifter noise
Hi all
I have a 57 plate E70 30.sd. Recently the box below the shift lever has been making strange noises. Prior to this the car would not allow me to shift to the sport/manual area of the box. It was as if I was locked out. This has not happened for the past few weeks now though.
What is happening though is a wierd noise is being emitted from the shift lever or rather below it. When you shift from full auto to DS or manual mode that motorised noise that you hear whilst shifting across is emitted at regular intervals.
It is most noticeable after a longer trip say 20 miles or so. Never while driving but only when stationary or after having selected reverse or drive. Sometimes it only last a second or two sometimes 5 sec or more. Really irritating. I am concerned that one day it will lock me out and render me stuck.
She attached a video link of my problem

Anyone had anything happen like this? Thanks.

Re: Auto box shifter noise
I had a problem with a shifter some time ago but the trim mechansim had collapsed making the selection of reverse physically difficult. My issue was not the same as yours but to me it sounds like a solenoid not engaging properly. I suspect your selector is faulty in which case it will need replacing but, you guessed it, it would also have to be coded.

Re: Auto box shifter noise
Hey. The gear selector mech was at fault. Managed to get it done through insurance. I think with the install and gearbox service cost them £1600. All sorted now.
Re: Auto box shifter noise
Thanks
Wife said it was fine today although she doesn't use manual sport
But no apparent noises
Going to get it looked at but doubt a fault code would be logged with shifter electronics
I'll keep an eye out on eBay

Re: Auto box shifter noise
If it is the 'control box' that sits below the gear lever (attached to it ) then it may well throw up a fault code.
I had mine replaced when you could no longer get easily into reverse. The lever would stop you in 'N' first. It had a fault code. My Indy said that his contact at BMW (for parts) was supplying a number of these units as they often has faults. It needed coding as the same part is used in the 5 and 7.
Hope you get it sorted.

Re: Auto box shifter noise
I've not experienced that issues again
Although the symptoms are:
In m/s mode and press P it doesn't return to park
And
When I turn the car on and its in park and go to drive I've noticed the handbrake isn't engaged?
Seems like a shifter issue and the part alone is £700!!

It does sound like it.
Coding is extra too!
