Some b*****d tried to steal the X5 last night!!

Went to the car earlier today and found the keyhole in the door damaged, and surrounding area scratched up.  They didn't get in, but the key lock is now broken i.e. if you put the key in, it just spins around.  Has anyone else had this misfortune?  I'm sure it will cost a small fortune to fix, but don't know how much?  The joy awaits me when I call BMW tomorrow.

I'm also now looking at getting one of these disklok steering wheel devices as a deterrent but have also read they can cause steering wheel damage?  Right pita, but seem to be the best rated for the purpose as far as I can see, and there's another X5 in my road with one fitted all the time.

That's an absolute

I hope BMW have the parts in stock - and you're not too badly hit in the pocket.

After the issues with the key cloning I brought a Stoplock from the 1990's back into use.  Perhaps they were trying to get to your OBDII socket.... :(

Don't bother with a disclok. If someone wants your car and it has one on they will just take the steering wheel off. Or put it on a truck. IMO, the best, and only decent way to secure your car is a tracker. Anything else is so easily disabled and/or ignored by members of the public.

I'd disagree regarding disk lock some professional thieves it takes them seconds to get of but it puts alot off, anything that slows/stops the shitheads is worth putting on.

I see what you're saying, but your average Johnny car thief couldn't get past the immobiliser on an X5, hence why I reckon a disclok is pointless. Peace of mind though, I guess!

Not a pleasant experience. Any additional obstruction is worth while though so they move on to the next one ...

Thanks for all the replies guys.  I'm preparing for a right shocker when I speak to BMW tomorrow, and even then I'm sure they'll surprise me.

I'm realistic about the effectiveness of a disklok, but given I live on a busy residential street, it may encourage a would be car thief to look to the next suitable car in the road (4 X5's in the street, 1 with a disklok on all the time).  Or maybe the M Class or Cayenne!  I've already got the top line trakker on the car, but problem with those is that they don't usually get triggered.  The policeman who came to see me explained he'd just written up a report on the very issue and those ebay devices publicised a while back have kept ahead of BMW such that a thief can open and steal the car without the trakker being triggered.  By the time you realise the car's gone and report it, whilst the trakker device should pinpoint its location, the car's by then usually on it's way overseas .... Pretty rubbish on BMW's part.  In my case the thinking is that it was an opportunistic idiot who wanted to see of there was something inside the car worth knicking (there wasn't) ...

Best theft deterent is to book your car into the dealers for some warranty work and then they keep it for the next 9 weeks whilst waiting for parts to arrive from Germany!!!!

Seriously now - sorry to hear about this and hope the car is getting sorted...
