I'm trying, and struggling to work out the difference visually between the 4.8 and the 4.4. I friend has the 4.8is and another friend has the 3.0d. They look very very different, but I've not been able to see a 4.4 in person. Could anyone tell me if they are the same or not?

Square exhausts at the back instead of quad round pipes (in two pairs) is the most obvious one.

The 4.8i has a subtle ish body kit and chrome ringed instruments iirc, as well as a different style of alloy wheel and nappa leather, and twin rectangular exhausts that make a raspy hard edged v8 noise rather than the discreet woofle of my much loved 4.4....just google images to check it all out ::)

Front & rear spoilers are slightly different & colour coded, grey dials & warm up lights, 20inch alloys, chromed quad tailpipes, nappa & not much else...I still miss mine loads especially the sound.

So there is a body kit difference. That's what I was trying to work out. Have tried google images but they look exactly the same! So am I right in thinking that there's two stages of bodykit? The 4.4 then a different one of the 4.8? And the 3.0d doesn't have one?

4.4 sport has just the sport bumpers front and rear, has xenons and silver grille as std, the 4.8 has the body kit , you may be confused as some cars have been chavved

Ah that'll explain it. The pics I've seen must be of 4.4 owners trying to make theirs look like a 4.8.

Thanks
I swapped it originally for a 520d touring as the fuel bills were eye watering on the X5 but the lack of performance of the 520d drove me mad so I thought sod fuels bills & i bought a V8 M3 which I love to bits, I just seem to appreciate a V8.
If I won the lottery I would buy another 4.8iS as they are such a lovely motor & they feel very special & I do miss it.

My mate who has the 4.8 told me the other day he has put 3.5k of fuel in since he got it 6 months ago! He does loads of really short runs in it though and it's his main car.
I'm in a fortunate position in that I don't do many miles and also any miles I do connected to work, including my commute, I get paid 45p a mile for, so the economy isn't really an issue. I had a highly modified Impreza that did about 25mpg and I never really paid much attention to how much fuel I was putting in. The only time I've ever really being conscious of it was when I had a 1.9tdi A4 that did 65mpg almost constantly. I kept going to put fuel in and going "oh. I don't actually need to."

I used to do a 44 mile daily round trip in mine & if you drove it with any vigour it returned 12 mpg so I can see how your mate has spent so much!
You are in a strong position then regards fuel which is great & the 4.8 is a very special car imo they sound gorgeous ride really well & give a decent turn of speed for such a heavy beast.
I look forward to seeing piccies of your X5 which ever model you get in the future.
Cheers

I agree! Sadly good low mileage examples are so much harder to come by. My friends is a 2004, one owner from new, 72,000. It's proving hard to match that! Seems to be a lot more decent 4.4's.
