Just back from a week away in Yorkshire chasing Grouse. One of my friends came up with a "Top Gear" challenge before we left. The challenge, who could go furthest me in my LPG/Petrol powered X5 or him in his TDV6 Disco and what would it cost per mile, at the last minute we had another entry a RR TDV8. So the challenge rules all 3 of us brimmed the tanks, we would then drive until the fuel light came on then refill and measure cost against miles covered. All 3 would be travelling in convoy from Sussex up to Yorkshire via the A24, M23, M11, A14, A1 once there we would spend a week trundling around the moors before heading home by the same route. Non of us treated it as an "economy run" so all driving was at proper motorway speeds etc.
Total distance for the round trip 694 miles we all started from Bucks Barn Services on the A24 South of Horsham and that was the finish point.
The TDV8 RR needed to fill up at Peterborough Services after 551 miles with a fill cost of £122.56 about 21p per mile. About 140 miles short of the finish.
The Disco made it to Lakeside Services 593 miles covered and the fill cost was £121.34 about 20p per mile and about 45 miles short of the finish.
The X5 made it to Pease Pottage Services on the M23 684 miles covered LPG £47.60 + Petrol £116.50 about 24p per mile but only 8 miles from the finish if I had been braver on the orange light I may have made it.
The Disco and RR are both 59 plate cars and lower mileage than the X which is an 02 vintage.
So an 11 year old V8 Dual fuel car is definitely in the same area as a more modern diesel. As you can imagine the banter goes on but I declare the X the winner.

Re: Dual Fuel Vs Diesel
Plus your car didnt break down , with a reliability reputation Land Rover can only dream of.
I wouldnt touch ANYTHING made by Land Rover................Great idea shocking execution. A broken watch is mopre reliable........
X5 the clear winner by miles.

Re: Dual Fuel Vs Diesel
The Disco and RR diesel engines are not as good as the BMW petrol or diesel units and their cars are heavier so I'm not surprised they ran out of fuel before you did. Good result though.

Re: Dual Fuel Vs Diesel
Would have been good to see the cost per mile if you just ran the lpg, it would have ment more fill up stops due to the smaller tank but that's a trade off i thinks worth it to lower the running cost IMO
Re: Dual Fuel Vs Diesel
and you were carrying a greater volume of fuel that the other two, but great fun anyway
