Key Doesn't Work, Can't Start Engine, Can't Use Remote Control After Battery Re

Post by voidale » Tue Sep 03, 2013 11:32 am

Hello guys I need help

My dad's 2005 X5 was low on battery, I tried to start up the engine (few times) it failed and reduced the battery even more. So I took it out and charged it over night at home.

Returning the battery back the remote key buttons unlock, lock, or backdoor open don't work. But what worse is when I put the key into the ignition hole I can only turn it 1 step. (Can't cycle it to try to startup the engine) and there is no dash lights or radio turned on.

Any ideas? The car doesn't recognize the key? Or it's something else?

p.s there is non standrat added alarm system in the car as well if this makes any difference (Gps tracking, Voltage monitor etc..)

Thank you!

The Steering lock may be inhibiting the key from being turned.  Or the key is no good.  What about the spare?

It also sounds like the keys need reprogramming on the car.  This can happen after a battery issue.  Read the whole procedure of both options before proceeding with either procedure 1 or 2.

***************************************************
Reprogramming Key Fob

1.  To do this procedure you need to have one working key and one key that needs to be programmed.
with both keys, get in the car and close all windows and doors.
Put working key into the ignition and turn to position 1 (the accessories should turn on)
turn the key back to position 0 and take key out of the ignition.
Using the working key, hold down the unlock button, press the Roundel (lock button) 3 times, and release the unlock button. Doors should lock and unlock.
With the new key, hold down the unlock button and press the Roundel (lock button) 3 times and let go of the unlock button. Doors should lock and unlock and you're done!!

2.  Alternate procedure if above doesn't work or if you do not have a working remote:
Place key in the ignition and cycle back and forth between position 0 and position 1 five times very quickly
Remove the key from the ignition
While holding down the unlock button, press the lock button 3 times and then release the unlock button. The doors should lock and unlock to confirm the programming.
If you have another key to program then repeat step 3 for the additional remote(s). The doors should lock and unlock to confirm the programming.
Turn on ignition to finalise
Part number for replacement master key/remote: 66-12-6-955-750
****************************************************

I used the second option as the first one did not work as expected (it actually removed both keys!!).  The second procedure worked though and both keys were fine after that.

Good luck
