Range calculations

Where does the E53 OBC get its data from to calculate the remaining range?
I ask as I thought my X was being inventive and running on air yesterday.
I had driven approx 350 miles since the last fill and thought I would top up so I had a full tank to get home.
After brimming it, the computer declared a range of 620 miles.
I presumed the figure was based on previous mpg and fuel level.
I then proceeded at 75mph on the motorway for some time noticing that the range stayed at 620.
I found this to continue, and only after having driven for 120 miles did it decide that the range would start to decrease.
740 miles on a tank? I wish. Actual figures put it closer to 560 miles with enough left to find a fuel station before picking up all the real crap in the bottom of the tank.
Anyone else had a similar experience?

my '05 diesel when full stays indicating 999 km even after driving some times as much as 250 km
but then if im super careful i have seen 1200km from a tank

OBC takes level of fuel and current MPG normally .
Must say mine is relatively accurate on both MPG and remaining distance .
If I do a long drive back to UK as in Aug then when I fill up mine will go 999 KM (which is i think highest reading)
then after I've filled up and reset MPG after 1-200 KM will start to tick down .
My Missus did a refill in UK and remaining distance was down to 9 KM on OBC after yellow light been on ages
and when we refilled got just over 90 Litres in to tank .
It is possible to change the parameters of the OBC by going into the service menu , but I'm not 100% sure on how you work out which way to change it now . I saw a friend do it to his when it kept showing far to
generous MPG and he got it down to showing within 0.5 MPG after altering the feed characteristics

Over 500 miles on a full tank??!!???... i wish.
I have stuck £145 in my 3.0d over the last month and have just managed to get 500 miles, and thats driving normal, no stupid driving on a bypass doing 60-70mph to work and then home, all in about 20 miles a day then just the odd trip to the shops etc.. I have always thought mine is broken somewhere as I thought it would do more than that being a diesel.

Strange  ???
Even on our local school trip the Missus is getting 28/29 MPG (and she's got boots of lead!!) and we never
get less than 800 KM from a tank and normally quite a bit more , on average 850/875 KM so 530/550 Miles .
On trips back to UK we've had over 1000 KM from a tank , the most was 1250 KM (777 Miles) and OBC was
showing just over 40 MPG .
Maybe because I've had mine re-mapped and it's got more torque it's better ??

Not bad , mine is 9.1 litre/100 for this year's average coz most of time it's used for the 'school' run .
