Hi all, completely off topic but whilst in the states recently I purchased an iPad for £320, first time I have ever actually used one was when it came out the box, and think they are brilliant!!! Anyone else got one?? Any apps that are a must?? they are brilliant!! They run cold for ten hours battery life!! How on earth do apple do it?? My net books fan kicks in ding dong and always over heats and shuts off!!!

You can have multi window though? Just click to open a new window, and they are shown as about 16 on a screen or so.

I''ve got one too - saved $$$ when picked it up states side. Nice, works for what I use it for and will feature in future MOD i reckon on the E70, thinking of getting another one and setting up a mac mini in the car when they release the iPAD dock http://www.autoblog.com/2010/09/20/bmw- ... tegration/

Will probably work out cheaper than the OEM dvd system i didn't buy for the E70  then the kids can have as much content as they want - ok so the mac mini may be overkill and i can have all i need on the ipads without this but hey gets the thinking going :roundel:

iPad

These things are just so intuitive to use!! My 10 month old baby had the hang of it whilst showing him an interactive book last night!!! Lol. I too only bought the wifi version as not really interested in 3G as there are so many wifi spots available these days!!

I was very sceptical when they first appeared, but afyer buying an iPhone 4 and struggling to read the screen I succumbed. Really pleased with it too, and even better now the IOS 4.2.1 update is out.

I still prefer my Sony eReader for books as it's lighter and lasts longer, but for other things it's a brilliant tool. We aren't gong anywhere near the US so had to pay for the UK model with 3G which was an ouch!

Yes, have the Sony eReader as well and the iPad is not really coming close to that usability.

Have not yet taken the plunge to get an iPad, but probably will one day. Have had a 3Gs for a while now and find that it does everything I need but agree the larger screen would be a big advantage. As BL02WAS states, the kids lve this sort of tech and pick it up very quickly my 16 month old girl is a big fan of my phone  Talking of WiFi read this yesterday http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters ... llanjones/ any thoughts on any apps that can make iPhone/iPads more secure?

In simple terms no. That is the problem with open networks. Remember that your phone calls are encrypted and the 'key' is rolling, controlled by the network, and as far as I know have never been made public. My former employer had specialist equipment with which we could read the traffic, but then we were allowed to - and that kit was VERY expensive and VERY hard to obtain unless you were part of the Government - not Local Gov't I hasten to add. Current mobile technology is pretty secure - but nothing is 100% secure for long.

About the only way to improve security is to use VPN technology for point to point communications. This assumes of course that both ends can make use of it, and the network supports it. VPN produces an encrypted path between to points and is difficult to crack.

To counter Firesheep, there is an add-on for Firefox called Blacksheep which detects Firesheep's snooping activities. There is also an application called 'HTTPS Everywhere' which requires the cookies supplied to be encrypted and the use of HTTPS rather than HTTP.

Ultimately I think the rule I was taught on the first day with the Royal Signals was - the enemy is always listening!! Who 'the enemy' was never got explained, but in todays world I think it can be taken as anyone out there could be trying to crack your traffic. We had a problem 25 years ago when mobile phones were still new - and insecure - where the Blackwall Tunnel exits were favourite sites for a gang scanning for mobile phones logging on again. They simply copied the code and cloned it into another phone and bingo - you got the bill!! It's not possible to do that easily anymore and all networks detect multiple phones with the same ESN and shuts them off.
