Give us a clue is it a petrol or diesel, please put what. Variant your vehicle is in your signature please, this will help other members help you.
For example when a catalytic converter goes, you get the smell of sulphur, this gives off the odour of rotten eggs.
You can smell the car in front some times when in traffic if the cat has gone. If the smell follows you, it could be your car maybe.

Diesels have Catalytic Converters up until the E70 when DPF's were introduced. It's why the exhausts point at the road on diesel E53s and straight out on later models.

It might, but then again it's a BMW so the electronics might be broken........only kidding.
Not sure what brings a warning light on in those circumstances. Is the car being used on short journeys? That could be clogging the cat perhaps and a good thrash will blow the soot out.
